I just bought my 96 prelude with the 5 speed manual transmission. it has 150k miles. when the car was purchased it would grind going into fifth gear. we had determined that this issue was caused by the synchronizer but didnt have the money to fix it. after owning the car for a few weeks i noticed that after 5 to 10 shifts into fift the next shift and the shifts after that would be smooth no grind.. well after a hard night on the car it would not shift to reverse. it previously was hard to shift to reverse when the car was hot but it went every time. now it's like theres a wall in the way because it wont go all the way in and it gets almost stuck halfway in then you push it out and give up. after rolling the car out and leaving we realized that fifth gear is now working perfectly. whats the problem!? i would appreciate any help
Previous owner probably ran the transmission without enough fluid in it, 5th gear rides the highest so low fluid will cause it to burn up. A lot of people tend to ruin reverse by trying to shift into it while rolling. If you're having trouble going into it then just slowly roll your foot off the clutch while pushing it into reverse until it goes in. If you have the skill to replace the synchro yourself then it's worth keeping the tranny but if not you should start looking for another cause it'll cost more to have someone else fix it than buying a new one.

well although the car is in my name my dad is the one that was driving it (hard) before the grind switched to a no reverse issue so hes willing to pay for it. how much would it cost for parts, if i wanted to do it myself, parts/labor if he wanted to get it fixed, and how much for a new one
Go there to get a good lightly used transmission and as for parts, pretty sure only the Honda dealership will have the parts needed to rebuild the transmission. If you're gonna replace one set you might as well do them all while its apart though.

might also be that your clutch's fritions plate doesnt have any more material.. samll chance .. when and if YOU pull the tranny off take off the pressure plate and have a look at it.. might just change it anyways since its off if its the origial clutch.. my OE lasted to 184K and you said theres already 150K
Read up on the 4th gen TSB (technical service bulletin) - there's a defect in the 5th gear synchro that causes it to sort of grind when you shift into 5th gear. Mine doesn't do it any more for some reason, I'm not sure what I did to it for it to stop (about 130,000miles ago).
You can use 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil for the trans, but use Honda MTF instead - I rebuilt a H22 transaxle before and it did not shift with 10w30 synthetic motor oil but did with Honda MTF. The properties are a little bit difference in terms of fluids used - it does make a difference.
Hmm, maybe I need to switch to the Honda MTF, I'm using 10w30 in my T2W4 and sometimes 1st to 2nd feels like it almost wants to grind but doesn't. Maybe I'll get some smoother shifting.

new update: after messing with the shifter while the engine was off reverse works agian. fifth still grinds and reverse is still difficult but it lets it fully engage without popping out. i have no idea why it all of the sudden started working again but yesterday i was cleaning the car and i took the ashytrey out and was looking at the two rods i guess its the linkage that are attached to the shifter. when i move the shifter back and forth the rod on the right moves with it but the one on the left stays still. the one on the left does nothing more than twitch when the shifter is moved through all positions. is this normal or does something need to be adjusted or replaced
probably going to look into a lightly used tranny. if reverse is now perfect and fifth is now perfect...sometimes. i changed to honda MTF only to find out thats what was in there and it was clean. if i shift in to fifth gear going faster than 60mph it grinds the **** out of it like the clutch isnt in at all. clutch fluid is full and bled. master cylinder is in good shape and the slave cylinder recently replaced. when i push the clutch in going to 5th the revs drop to 1k and it still grinds the hell out of it if its going fast enough. double clutching has no affect on this new development

try putting some gm syncromesh tranny fluid in it. I put it in mine and the 5th gear grind was gone after a couple hundred miles. I know a lot lude owners use it and love it. worth a try
