Write Up: How to Remove Interior Headliner

How to remove your headliner.

**STEP ONE**
Remove the sun visors.
Use a flat head screwdriver (not like the phillips in the picture)

Two Screws to hold the visors

One Screw to hold the clip

**STEP TWO**
Remove the dome light and mirror.

Pry open the dome light with a small sharp flat head screwdriver as shown in the picture.

Then remove the two screws that hold the light assembly in place.
Once done, unplug the unit.

Next, grab the edge of the plastic trim and pull it away from the windshield. The back edge are held in by hooks while the front end are held by snaps.

Lastly, remove the three screw that hold the mirror in place.

**STEP THREE**
Remove the "OH S**T" handle on the passenger side.
Once again, using a small thin flat head screw driver, pop open the screw covers located on either end of the handle bar.

Then remove the exposed screws.

**STEP FOUR**
Remove the back C pillar interior plastic panel.
Just grab from the top and pull it down and outwards.
Be careful not the break it....if you pull on it slowly, it should come out without a problem.

Remove the seat belt bolt using a 14mm socket wrench.

Remove the A and B pillar plastic panels in the same fashion as the C pillar panels.
Take your time and everything will come out nicely.
However, note that the front of the plastic panel near, the dash board, has a hook.

Remove the hooked end by pushing the plastic panel upwards and then out.

**STEP FIVE**
Remove the round plastic cap at the the center of the roof above the back seats.
Just turn the plastic cap 90 degrees and pop it out.

Remove the headliner.
Grab a hold of it and push it forward towards the front of the car.
Then pull downwards to remove the entire unit.
Exit the car with the headliner, but be careful not to bend or twist it because it is made out of cardboard.

**FINISH**
This is what it looks like when you're done.
(I'm not sure if that red tape is factor or not, but mine is coming off and needs new ones.

Very clean write-up.
What kind of plans do you have for modding the headliner?

thanks

oh....hahaha, sorry to burst your bubbles, but i was only fixing a few minor flaws.

the back of the headliner sags a little.
a couple of books are pressing on it for a couple of days hoping that it will straighten it out.

but, i was mostly trying to find a water leak that i have on my back window.
after i took the headliner off, i srayed water on my car. then jumped inside my car to find my leak.
i sealed it back up and will do another test after my seals have dried.

that's great!
i'm glad my write up is useful to someone

good luck trying to find that rattleing sound!!!

just note that the sunroof unit is really sealed up
it might be hard to find your problem, but who know...maybe it's a loose bolt.

it's actually REALLY easy
it only took a few minutes to take it out

the hardest thing will be putting it back in and making it fit exactly where it's suppose to
lucky the clips will help out, but it's just hard to see them since there is no space to sneak a peek.

Nice write up, how hard do you think it would be to get the sunroof shade out? I'm thinking of a few things with the headliner and that seems to be the hardest thing to take care of.

it will take a lot more work since it is inside the sunroof assembly
there is a metal plate and covers up the unit.
i'm sure if you remove that, you can get the sunroof shade, but you will have to double check first.

good luck

Here are pictures of the front and back of the headliner when it's off the car.

I finally finished sealing up my back window and it's now water tight.
I put everything back in and found a few hints that I want to share with you.

***STEP ONE***

Bring the headliner inside the car and rest it on top of the headrest.
Be careful not to bend the headliner.

Go to the back of the car and push the three snaps into the holes on the roof.

You may have to stick your finger up there to find the hole. When you find it, go ahead line everything up and push up until you hear a "snap"
Remember that in order to Remove the snaps, you need to slide the headliner backwards towards the back of the car BEFORE pulling it down.

***STEP TWO***
Once the back half is in place, go to the front of the car and install the mirror.

When you finished, the headliner will stay in place and you can move around without the headline falling.

***STEP THREE***

Start to put everything back together in reverse order.
HOWEVER, make sure the weater stripping around the doors and sunroof overlap the plastic panels.
I had to use a small flat head to fold the weater stripping out from under the plastic trims.
(This by far took the longest time out of the installation.)

Lastly, when you are using the screw driver or flat head, be careful not to slip because you could polk a hole through your headliner and that would be bad.

Other than that...it's really quick and easy.

I hope that helps!

THATPRELUDEGUY - Like natcc99 said, you'll have to take out the sunroof off first. Then you have to take the sunroof apart to get to the shading. I tried to do this at the junkyard when I was gutting the interior of a prelude and it took me half and hour, and i still could not get it out, untill finally I gave up, because i did not want to take the sunroof apart, then have to put it back together in the middle of a junkyard. the owner was really anal too.

Thank you so much...this is great! Thanks for your time and effort in doing the write-up. People like you make PO as helpful as it is! Everytime I do something to the car I sit back and admire it and then "D'OH!!! I forgot to take pics!!!"

I need to do this to retape all those wires that start to rattle like crazy.

One thing I didn't see mentioned - there's the plastic "screw" in the middle of the rear section. You use a broad flathead screwdriver to turn it 90 degrees & unhook it.

YES, you are correct. I'm sorry, but I forgot to put that in.
(I made an edit to the instructions)

Thanks everyone.
I'm glad you like my Write-Ups.
When I work on my car, I always have my camera with me. It takes a little time since I have to stop what I'm doing and take pictures of everything, but I think it's worth it in the end.

HAHA...it's funny because I have only own my car for a few months and I have already taken half my car apart!

Good luck on you Projects!

SUNSHADE

HOW TO REMOVE THE SUNSHADE

I haven't done this myself, so I will write you insturctions how to do it base off my Honda Service Manual. (My Prelude BIBLE!!)

Looking at the instructions, I suggest having two people help you this this project since you don't want it to fall on your head.

**STEP 1**
Close the sunroof and open the sunshade.
Go inside your car and you should find two plastic covers on either end with small caps.

Remove the cap and unscrew the hidden screw. Now, slide the plastic cover foward.
Now the plastic cover is off the car exposing hidden nuts that hold the glass in place.

Remove the 4 nuts on either side and you will be able to remove the glass.
(I suggest marking the glass before you remove it so that you can put it back exactly where you had it. You can probably use some tape with a marker)

**STEP 2**
Go to the rear seats and disconnect the motor.
Next, remove the motor from the roof of the car.
There are two bolts and three nuts that hold it in place.

Once your done, remove all other wires that surround the unit.
You can probably just tape them to a side and out of the way.

**STEP 3**
Now it's time to remove the sunroof assembly from the car. Here is where I suggest having a friend help you out.
There are a total of 10 bolts that need to be removed.
Go ahead and unbolt those, but leave the two front ones last.

**STEP 4**
That was the hard part.
You can proababy figure it out from here.

Just turn the unit around and you'll see some channels and seals.
Remove the channels by removing the screws and pushing it forward to unhook the clips.

**STEP 5**
When you have those out, you should be able to take the sunshade off the car.

GOOD LUCK...remember, I haven't done this myself, so be careful not to break anything along the way.
