with no mods? found a cheap set and wondering if it will work

Why would you not ask if they would work on a '97 or '01 model as well? The 5th generation Prelude was from 1997 to 2001 - just FYI. And all the wheel specs are the same throuhgout these years.

It depends on which wheels you are talking about. The probably would work. If you are asking about these:

..then yes, these should work fine. They are 17"x7" with a 45 mm offset. I have the Accord HFP 17" wheels on my prelude and they are fine. The main thing you will want to be concerned with in wheel selection is the offset. Also, for our cars, you should not go larger than a 7.5" width in my opinion. You can go larger, but you may have issues with rubbing. You should read the section on wheels/tires to determine what you should use:
