Wont Reverse.

First time poster here. Looking for friendly info

2001 Prelude 5 speed. (stock)

First off, lets say "yeah" i did the 5th gear grind... and hard too.. reverse went out, checked it at a red light, nothing... few days go bye and checked again nothing, few more then got it go in, hard grind... Went a 5-6 weeks without a grind then one morning on my way to work... was going into 3rd and grind... got to work, checked reverse.. nothing. been without reverse for 3 weeks now,
What would be the most common thing i would need to do..
-new tranny
-used tranny
-rebuild tranny
-replace part (dont knonw what part yet)
-What would be best

Went to a transmission shop and got a taged with a $2100 for a used tranny and labor.

I have read many threads with this same problem but no real answer to it.

-LoL, Never had any trouble with 98 HX civic...

Have you done anything to the transmission?

Auto-Manual Swap?
New Clutch Master/Slave Cyls?

Did anything happen that lead up to this? I.E Reverse at 150mph... Accident... Redlined reverse...?

Did anything strange happen before it stopped working? did it grind at all before?



Worse case, I'd say it might be the transmission; grab another for $400, get out the 14mm socket, a few bottles of fluid, and go to town =)

Nope, nothing of that matter Conjur, bought it at 93k miles right at 102k now and i really dont know if anything happen before buying it. Only thing i have done was the 3rd and 5th gear grind. Released clutch to soon.

sounds like your syncro has gone out....Reverse runs off the 5th gear syncro, but when my 5th gear syncro went out, I still had reverse. Sometimes it was hard to put into reverse, cause I'd have to roll back a little so that it'd slide in....

^The reverse is straight cut (un-synched), that is why you would still have it if a sync was worn out.

For anyone that was ever curious this is why the reverse whines. If you ever listen to a race tranny it sounds almost like a supercharger since they are often straight cut gears.

I broke mine by shifting from 2nd at peak rpm and missing 3rd more times than I can count. I pulled my trans and replaced 5th gear and the syncro set. Sounds like this will be in your future one way or another.

Then put it all back together with a new 5th gear and 5th gear syncro set. You will soon be back on the road.
