Will my Advans be a problem? :^(

I bought a set of brand spankin new Advan RCII's last fall and waited patiently until warm weather before I started shopping for tires.

I'm ready to buy tires now, and I've done my share of research on this site, but I want to make sure I'm buying the right size tire with THE MOST PROTECTION possible without rubbing problems.

OK, the Advans are 17x7.5 w/ 45 mm offset. Should I go with 215/40 or 215/45?

I pretty much ruled out the possibility of using 225's because at that width, I would most definitely need to run a 40 sidewall height to avoid rubbing, and the only tire that comes in 225/40 are Nitto's which I don't want.

So, in a 215 width, should I go with the 40 or 45 height? I don't care too much about overall tire diameter and odometer accuracy, but I want the most rubber on these babies so I'm safe from pothole damage and curbs. What do you think?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I'm lowered approx 1 inch with Mugen setup..... I don't think it'll affect things too much though.

Get the 215/45/17 tires. They offer more wheel protection. And you have a much better choice of performance tires in that size.

If you go 215/40/17, you are limited to mostly "tuner" tires as opposed to real performance tires, and you lose about 1/4" of protection for your expensive wheels.

thanks for the fast reply!

I know many ppl think that 225 width is overkill, but I do have pretty wide rims (7.5) as oppose to many others who have the usual 17x7.

Does anyone know if 225/45 is too much? Will that rub?

I would not go 225/45. 215/45 is already taller than stock, 225/45 would be even taller by 1/2 cm... this makes your gearing even taller.

There is a great wheel/tire size calculator on Miata.net.

I thought 45 refers to the height of the sidewall

the overall rolling diameter should'nt be changed by going to a 225 (wider) tire......

The "45" is the sidewall aspect ratio. It's not a measurement, it's a percentage. You take the wheel width *aspect ratio = sidewall height

215/40/17
215mm * .40 = 86mm sidewall

215/45/17
215mm * .45 = 96.75mm sidewall

225/45/17
225mm * .45 = 101.25mm sidwall

Try Miata.net wheel/tire calculator:

Ah-ha, now it makes sense. I didn't know it was a ratio number...

I would really like to be using 225's though..

I think they'll be a better fit for the wheel.

Aside from taking away from acceleration slightly, does anyone think I can get away with using 225's w/o rubbing problems?

yea dont forget, the tires can be the same size, but they actually vary between brands....

example 205/50/16

bridgestone is smaller in hieght and width compared to a kumho 712. and the kumho is a little smaller than a falken ziex....

look at otther tires to see what looks the best
