Why did honda use a cable tranny on 5th gen's?

Err, I dunno if this is a dumb question or not, but I just got my 01 prelude 5spd and I've been reading up on it. Why did honda use a cable linkage setup instead of the setup they use on integras for example (hydro?). My shifter feels a lot different from my brother's integra, a lot more delicate. Since before the s2000 wasn't the prelude supposed to be honda's flagship? Why would honda equip their flagship with a subpar transmission setup? Thanks guys.

I dunno either, but I'd trade my POS 5th gear clunking cable transmission for a Teg-like rod tranny anyday. Standgely, the new RSX uses a cable tranny now too.

Does 4th gen use rods? Now I recall that my 4th gen had a little more 'solid' and tighter shift feels...

i dont know but be careful with your tranny cable, i learned the hard way and busted the bump stop in it and now i have a really sloppy tranny but i had a short shifter and a shortened lever plus my aggressive driving skills i broke the cable

The 4th and 5th gen VTEC tranny is the same except for gear ratios. And yes, they are both cable-actuated shifters.

Hydro refers to the clutch, and the Prelude does have a hydraulic clutch.

As for the use of a cable shifter, I would imagine that there isn't room for a linkage shifter. My daily driver (90 Integra) has a linkage shifter, and it shifts like ****. The bushings are probably pretty worn, but I haven't had any major problems shifting the Prelude, unless I was trying to shift too fast, or not shifting smoothly. If you learn to shift smoothly, you won't have any problems.

thanks for the responses. I just drove my brother's integra again and it feels so direct and solid. Would a cable linkage have any effect on the posts going on around here concerning bent forks and poor synchros? perhaps the lack of feedback in a cable linkage is effecting a driver's ability to sense transmission grinding, etc?
