I'm curious as to why most automatic vehicles have one gear less than their manual counterparts? And would plopping in a 6th gear for the manual Preludes manuals really improve our performance as with a 5th for the SS?

My friends Jetta in sportshift mode has 5 gears. Definitely not as fun to drive as a real manual though, I don't like how there is a lag time between shifts.

The same reason why the manual tranny dont have the 6-speed.
The original reason was simply they couldn't make the car smart enough not to gear hunt. That aided with the amount of time it takes to shift would make it a major complaint to buyers and mag writers. At the time, a 4sp auto was about the best they could do at the time without making the ride choppy. Due to improved technologies, the RSX at around the same price now has a 5sp Auto.
I have no answer to the lack of a 6th gear though. I suppose it just wasn't that common at the time.
