Oil catch can:
The government requires all street driven cars to have a PCV, or positive crankcase ventilation system, to capture all the crankcase or blow buy gases inside your engine and feed them thru the engines intake system to be re burned. Engines that are not in very good running condition ,or in the case of a race car engines that are being pushed beyond their normal limits, burn excessive amounts of oil and as a result create a large amount of these oily crankcase gases. The biggest problem associated with these oily gases is a plugging of the EGR, or exhaust gas recirculation passages, which then require frequent cleaning.Engines with excessive crankcase gases need a catch can ,which is shown in your picture, which acts as a sort of a band aid solution, that traps the excessive oil thats running thru the pcv system before in gets to the intake to be re burned.Normal engines that you find on the street that are in good condition ,and are not being stressed beyond their normal design limits, don't burn excessive amounts of oil so they don't require such a band aid/substitute for an engine overhaul. The top tier detergents coming from the fuel injectors mandated by the government do a good job of keeping the intake valves, cylinder head and walls as well as the most critical part of the intake runner clean so long as its not overwhelmed by the combustion byproducts of a poor running and/or highly stressed, leaky engine coming from the pcv system.
