In the gas chamber (where you put your gas in) it says Premium Unleaded Fuel only, does this mean 93 octane? If not, would it hurt the car to start putting 87 octane in it after I've been running 93 for a couple of months? Please I need help!
This is one of the most often asked questions about 5th gen Preludes.
The simple fact is that the LABEL says-Premium Fuel Only. It does NOT say maybe or any options. You can use 91-94 octane and the ECU will not retard the timing. Using anything less can and will affect performance-only do this if you are some place where the correct fuel is not available. I understand that gas is horribly expensive-my truck eats regular. BTW: a new engine for a Prelude retails for the price of several used cars that one can buy.

Why would you even consider a lower grade gas for the lude?
I know the prices are crazy now, but if thats the issue drive conservatively, plan your trips, link your shopping chores... etc.
Its still 230+ on a full tank.. so atleast it aint a 8cylinder or a SUV gas sucker. I just paid $25.00 for full tank (cali people need not to post... I know and feel you pain.)

I paid $30.00 for 13.859 Gallons. I also learned that it has a 15.9 Gallon tank (now that they sent me the manual). I was driving with the gas light on for about 15 miles. Meaning I had 2 gallons left. Good to know the gas light is pretty generous . I'll be milking the tank for a while hoping the price will come down in a week or two.....and racing will have to happen less and less frequently. hehe

I have a theory on this - Honda doesn't want:
a) people on the side of the road (looks bad)
b) people replacing fuel pumps because they were sucking air (really bad for them), thus increasing the life and reputation of the car.

Whoa ****.....I guess that's what you guys in cali get huh? I got 13.9 gallons of 93 octane here in texas for 30....how much a gallon is premium there??
The only problem I have with this is after a while gas loses it's volitiles. I took this from another site.
"One of the most frequently encountered problems this season is the issue of “bad gas. While not involving flatulence, it is just as big a problem.
We have had more fuel-related problems ranging from poor starting, hesitation, etc. to just plain “quit and won’t restart this year than in any of the past 25 years we have been here.
Modern gasoline has been subject to formulation restrictions that now allows only a 4 to 6 week shelf life from refinery to consumption before its usefulness as a fuel is compromised.
The biggest issue is the fact that the “volatiles evaporate very quickly. The reason these volatiles are so important is that they are part of the gasoline that affects starting and throttle response. That is why you can often feel the difference between individual tanks of gas when it comes to starting, cold running and acceleration at lower rpms....
The best way to avoid quality problems is to be certain you buy gasoline at a name-brand station. The neighborhood convenience store buys gas from a broker, so you have no idea what it is. Also do not use ethanol-dosed gasoline, as it is very reactive with the metal used in carburetor bodies. Brand name stations have much more control over the product they sell. We use Amoco/BP Regular as our baseline gasoline in the shop."

Damn!! That is HIGH!! I knew Cali had high prices, but man. Gas prices here are at a ALL TIME record high now. I started out using Sunoco gas, but my car hated it. Hesitation, inconsistant power, ****ty milage. Now I use Mobil 93 octain and it is at 2.21/Gallon! It is usually around 1.75-1.89.
