What is the difference between h22a & h22a4

I see all these different numbers on so called direct fit engines. So what is the difference between lets say h22a & h22a4. Mine (98 prelude) has h22a4 on it, but I am seeing listing with h22a, h23a, h23, f20, f20b, etc. Most say these are all the same engine, but there has to be a reason why the different numbers/letters. Any simple explanation?? Thanks for everything and Merry Christmas to all!!

like h22a4 is more advanced than h22a1
h22a7 is more advanced than h22a4

there is lots of differ between those engines. search.
h22a7 is kinda best stock h22 engine what there is.

h22a is just JDM version of the engines. they have only marked them all as a h22a

h22 is h23's (non vtec) new design

There are a lot of small differences between the markets, most potent versions are the JDM ones, they won't have a number at the end. Euro market engines seem to be the weakest while USDM is sort of in the middle. Main differences are in the compression ratio between countries, anything before 97 is closed deck while 97+ is open deck block. Late years had a change in head design in like 2000 which will be stamped with PDE rather than P13 on the head.

H23A is just a stroked up H22A while the F20B is a destroked version with a slightly smaller bore diameter, that wikipedia page posted seems to have decently accurate info since I last read it so check that out.
