What is the black bar mounted between the grill and radiator?

There is a round black bar mounted behind the grill. It is supported with rubber mounts similar to motor mounts. What purpose does it server?

some kind of vibration dampener if you're describing what i'm thinking of. it's like 8 or 18 pounds of uselessness

supposed to function at or near 40mph or something. just search for black object behind bumper and you'll find lots of threads on it

When I replaced the front reinforcement on my car I left it off.

I haven't noticed anything different.

I've heard its some sort of reinforcement in case of an accident... in a crash i'd want as much stuff between my car and the other car to protect myself.

Nope, it's (supposed to be) a vibration damper.

But it's utterly useless - go ahead and take it off, it's 8.29 pounds off the front of your car. A little more if you feel like cutting/grinding off the brackets.

just because you don't "feel" anything doesn't mean something isn't happening/being prevented.

I had the bar taken out and put in this Universal Oil Cooler for my ATTS. I think the shop that did it fabbed it up pretty well. This oil cooler basically works like a big heat sink with stubby fins coming out of all sides of the cylinder. It's a little different from the norm of a typical Autozone aftermarket oil cooler/tranny cooler.

WTF?

From what I've read in the past, it's a vibration damper, but I've never heard a true definition of how/what. Couldn't tell you what specifically it's dampening, and for that I would personally leave it be. However, as Daemione pointed out, some people have removed theirs years ago without noticeable side effects, so it's really up to you if you deem it useless.

Its a vibration damper alright. I wouldn't even bother taking it off though, 8-10 lbs. won't help at all unless you are gutting the whole interior in which everything adds up.

I'm reposting from several threads in the past here, but . . .

Honda Media Newsroom used to have a technical article that addressed it.

I've got a standing offer of $100 to the person who can tell the difference in their car with it on & off. Blind testing, statistically significant results.

Almost 8 years for me now.

you're not going to tell a difference because that thing helps with inaudible frequencies. these frequencies can shake thing structurally and cause massive amounts of irreparable damage (read as: a loose bolt over 10 years).

i agree that it's useless for the most part, so i'm not gonna wage bets or continue to argue. but it does serve its role.

serves a role of being dead weight. but i guess we'll have to pick this argument up in 2 years when daemione hits 10 years.

and thx daemione for clearing it up, i was just guessing randomly.
