Weird Noise in Park and Neutral rattling

I have 1997 automatic prelude thats making a really weird noise and I really want to get rid of it. The car has 168000 km on it soo not tooooo much...I know the automatic prelude has alot of problems... I wish i knew about it but im stuck with it...

So in park and neutral it makes a rattlign noise not to loud while your inside the car but if the hood is open its very very noticeable. But as soon as it hits a drive gear it goes awway. An another thing i noticed was if its neutral and rolling the noise guys away and comes back when the car goes back to rest.

Any of suggestions on whats wrong with my car and if there are any temporary fixes to stop it. I dont have the money right now for a new tranny.

Put it in park, pop the hood, and try to narrow down the location of this rattle. Is it in the engine bay? Is it in the suspension? Is it under the car? Is it on the driver side? Is it on the passenger side? You see what I'm saying. Get to it.

EDIT: Sell the sissy-tranny car and buy a 5spd. Sorry pIERCE, I forgot.

Well I checked it out and its coming from either the engine bay or under the car for sure. Something else i noticed in park as i give it a bit of gas the rattling noise increases as well. I haven't changed my timing belt yet and im due for it, do you think that could be the problem?

I want to sell this car so im trying to get rid of this problem.

That only rules out the muffler. Try harder.

Had a problem like this with my auto lude. Whenever my car was in park or neutral, could hear this irritating rattle, that would go away when in gear. Took it into to the shop and discovered that the torque converter was failing.

Try to find the exact location of the sound. Jack it up and leave it in neutral and try to find it while the car is on. Make sure though that no is around the car and that you have the handbrake on hard. I had a problem like this with my old **** shift as well.

Check your heatshield. I had a loose piece on my lude and it rattled like stink.
