water pump pully issue

Ok as Im driving home tonight I start hearing a weird noise from my engine on the drivers side. Sounded like a mouse squeekin and it wouldnt go away.
I drive slow since im only 3 blocks from home and i get home turn off the car pop the hood and I see this

It obvious that the gear has slid off and ate through the plastic cover but my question is should there be a carter pin in the bolt shown in the picture? Its looks like there should be. I just had my car worked on for the balance shaft seal coming out and now this.
Is this normal? Has anyone else ever heard or experienced this?

cotter pin......cater pin lol.

The cog on the water pump is held on by factory attachment. There isnt a cotter pin to hold, it is attached to the waterpump assembly itself and should not have any movement on it at all. If it is moving enough to cause the belt to come off then you need to address the issues by purchasing and installing a new water pump.

To tell if the water pump is still somewhat good, try moving the gear side to side and or up and down, now try push in and pull outwards. If it moves in any direction then it is a failed part and needs to be replaced.

ok long story short i got extremely lucky.
basically my water pump took a dump and in the process the gear started pushing off the shaft.
i stopped the engine before the gear came completely off thank god cause if it would have then my whole engine would have crashed and burned. since the timing belt would have came off and then pistons and valves everwhere.
i have a new water pump ordered and should be here tomorrow and hopefully the car will be up and running in a couple days.
now on the down side....loading my car on the trailor ended up scratching up the pass side front fender...so guess ill be painting it again.
geezzzz no joking im almost to the point of selling her and getting something else. seems like its been one thing after another the last few months.
