Vtec solenoid valve

So Im rebuilding my head and I pulled off the vtec solenoid valve to replace the seal/filter element. I found some very small metal shavings in the screen. There werent too many and Ive never seen any metal shavings when changing the oil or anything. The head is in great shape and I dont see where they came from. should I be concerned or is it really a big deal?

Well, they had to come from somewhere. So yes, it could be a potentially bad thing.

You could worry about it and tear apart your engine and find the cause which would be quite hard and expensive.

Or you could not worry and leave it at that. Metal shavings doesn't necessarily mean your motor is toast, or getting "toasted"......it just means there is abnormal wear or damage occurring. That, then, may lead to a failure of some sort.

Not much help, but that's my outlook.

In my opinion. If it was just a few slivers its fine. That's why they put screens on stuff like that. Now if there was alot of metal. I would be worried.

i wouldnt worry about it too much, if there was a coious amount of them then that would be different. make sure you clean out the spool screen, then if you are still concerned about it, in a month or so or after an amount of driving take the solenoid off and check again. monitor the amount to see if there is any change.
