Ok so I did quite a bit of searching before posting so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this...
About 10 months ago or so my Speedo crapped out. Came on here after getting the CEL code pulled and concluded that my VSS was faulty. Bought a new one, installed it, broke it on accident so got a replacement and installed it as well. About a month and a half ago the speedo would jump around like crazy when I went into VTEC and would sometimes stop working then come back. Then finally, it stopped working all together. What I'm wondering is what could be going wrong? I used to have a VAFCII quite awhile back and wiring was butt spliced in, no harness for me That didn't cause the problem tho as the VSS stopped working long after the VAFC got stolen. I also think the VSS I got to replace the old one was a non-VTEC model, would that make a diff? And other ideas as to what causes my VSS to crap out? Please help, thank you!
I would say that due to the splice job, its possible that the VSS feed to your ECU is grounding out somewhere. That would explain why when you hit VTEC (bit more vibration in that area), it causes it to jump around a bit, and eventually short the VSS circuit out.
Trace the VSS Wires clean back to the ECU, and find where the VAFC was spliced in... peel the electrical tape off, and make sure that it has a good connection, and doesn't still have a bare wire hanging out.
Secondly, it could be the VSS area of your transmission- I'm not too farmilure with it, but there could be an issue with the transmission, that is burning out the VSS's prematurely.
^Thanks for your help mike
Yeah I think I'm going to check the splice with near the ECU. I did use "cattails" (I think that's what they're called) but they're the little connectors that you you heat shrink to fix the wires and it has the little bit of solder right in the middle... Hopefully that'll be ok still. I read about this in the third gen forums and somebody mentioned checking the ground at the thermostat housing? Anyine know if this may be the case on a 5th gen?
Do you drive a 5th gen? If so, there is no 5th gen non-VTEC model. If you mean to say that you used a 4th gen VSS, then that's bad. The VSS modules are different between a 4th and 5th gen, since 4th gens use speed sensitive power steering.
Well I bought just a general honda VSS that was not compatable with VTEC, I didn't notice part number diff but maybe that was a mistake on my part Would that cause all my problems? Or is there maybe a bad ground somewhere?
Lol ok so I'm done. The sensor went on SO much easier this time than last, I'm guessing a sign that I really have the exact match this time. I did the whole job with the neg battery cable off so the ECU was reset with it I took it out for a test drive and everything seems to be working great annnnnnnnnndddd...
I HAVE VTEC BACK!
Gosh how I've missed her... feels like a whole different beast up there lol.
Alright, so I've also been working on some other problems... I should've just started a progression thread...
My last fix the get rid of all the CELs was to out a couple of sparkplug foulers on the secondary O2 because my high flow cat was causing a P0420 (catalyst system below efficency). So I did, and no CEL for a bit but then on the drive home it came back.
Stopped at Auto Zone to pull the code expecting the P0420 again, but NOW it's P0133, the PRIMARY sensor, AHHHH
I'm pretty sure I fouled it from the seafoam treatment. It was a risk, I knew that in the beginning so it's my own fault. Good news is no more P0420 so hopefully that's ok, unless the primary being fouled will not allow the secondary to read funky...
So I ordered a primary from sparkplugs.com for $47 bucks shipped, so hopefully it comes soon and I'll pass emissions next month!!!
Not to interrupt or anything, but I'd be careful with SparkPlugs.com. God forbid something ever goes wrong, because their customer service "specialists" are absolutely terrible. So watch out for that.

Proceed, Sir.
