V-AFC sensor type???

i initialized my v-afc a long while ago n just realized that i wasnt hitting vtec until 5000rpm.. n tonight i was reading the v-afc manual online, and it said to set the sensor in and out both at 06... i went to my car to check and they were set at 01 both. im thinking i wasnt hitting vtec at the point i set it because of this, but i dont know what the sensor type setting actually means.. anyone know? is this why i havent been hitting vtec earlier?
