mili meter thingys You mean a caliper?? You are correct... the only sure way to tell the difference is by measuring the lobes of the cams with a caliper.

whelp... took my car in today... the belt was frayed and the tensioner is the problem. this will be the second tensioner in less than a year.

the type-s cams have a slight bluish tint to them if youre trying to compare them to the stock cams.
i noticed a difference over the base cams...i dont know how much of a difference there is over the SH ones tho. i have to say that until i fully built my motor the type-s cams were my fave mod.

2keggie: you should just convert to the manual tensioner.

yeah... working on it. trying to get on from a h23. its not from just the cams tho. i had the cams for 4 yrs w/ no prob. as soon as i build up the valve train... snap. had to replace the tensioner... ran good for about 2 months, sluggish for 3 more... now gotta change it again... belt jumped a tooth. can't wait to have the lude running rite again. i had a greddy kit sittin for about 6 months now. might resleeve and build bottom b4 i slap on the turbo.... low compression... 160's across.

Neither the usdm or type-s cams have any marks, or the markings arent any different?

I have some camshafts sitting here (purportedly type-s) and they have these on them:

Does anybody have base cams lying around and can verify this?

Either way, I'll probably end up picking up a cheap caliper anyways.

Is this everything needed to do the manual tensioner install?

As for valve train, are you guys refering to pistons, rods, valves, retainers, etc...

Would any adjustable cam gear work with the type-s cams (i.e. AEM or Skunk2)?

OK I checked mine.
My USDM exhaust cam has a "J" and the number "9".
MY USDM intake cam has a "J" and the number "7".
This is from a 2000 base model.

I actually measured those cams I had a while back with replicate measurements using a digital caliper and found the measurements to be very close to the helm's values for new base cams. The mid lobes were like + ~0.07mm over base cams, with a std dev of +- ~0.07, so I concluded that those cams were most likely base cams also.
