I found a guy selling a set for 300$ plus shipping. I have a 97 Sh. Is it worth it to put them in? And do i need to change anything else when i put them in. I know with Small block V-8s you change the push rods as well. What kind of gains could i expect?

Of course you know we dont have the pushrods, but with those little things stock gear is fine......If i werre you id spring for something bigger, make it worth your while
if you get type-S cams you SHOULD get a valvetrain upgrade. the type-S cams wont give you too much of a gain, though they are better than our stock cams, mabye 10-15hp depending on your setup
i considered getting type-S cams as well because i wanted to stay stock and stay reliable, but i fiqured if your going to spend money getting that stuff installed, you'll wish you went for more powerful items so i went with crower stage 2.
-edit- oh yeah...dont compair our engines with v8's

these 4 are all the same guy, selling the cams with overlapping threads. He also has them listed on ebay. He told me he got them from a friend who just paid $700 for them, that the friend gave them to him to cover a $100 debt, and that there was no way he could get the receipts.
Sorry if you're disappointed, and I hope I am wrong about him, but I just thought I would share my uneasy feeling.

Dude, the type s cams are not that much bigger than stockers, and our valvetrain will handle it just fine. why spend a bunch of money building the head for some cams that dont need it, its just a waste of money! Because if you switch the rest of the valvetrain your gonna have to switch to a MANUAL TENSIONER and at that point your $1000 deep getting ready for some type s cams! Not necessarry, but its just my opinion......
a manual tensioner??? where can i get one of those?
as for the s cams, it depends on your goals. if you're really gonna build up ur head, i'd get something bigger.... if you want some reliable hp w/ little invested, go with the s cams. you will get some noticable gains from the s cams - i'd say about 10hp. if you're gonna go all the way and spend mucho$$$ for a full build up, i'm guessing that you will need a diff tensioner. I don't know if the manual tensioner (like nx said) but my tensioner has gone bad after upgrading my valve train. i had the s cams in my car for about 3yrs and never had any probs. got decent gains from them, better than any other single upgrade i've done. i recently had the opportunity to upgrade the rest of the valve train, so i did. i got r&d port, ss valves, r&d dual springs, ti retainers. soon after the new head, i started hearing a random knocking from near the back side of the motor. a good friend of mine suggested it was the tensioner - said h22 auto tensioner was pretty weak... sure enough, one day a a stop light, just standing still and it stalled. i had it towed to my mech - and the tensioner had gone bad. I had to do some machining to the head and replaced the valves. if i had been moving when the tensioner went bad, it could've been pretty bad. recently, that ominous knocking sound has returned.
NX... can you recommend somewhere i can get a manual tensioner?
I blew my tensioner off too recently, but i havent been able to totally survey the damage....I hope my valves are ok......it blew at about 2000 rpms.....
You could get some gains by just dropping them in, because the stock fuel maps are rich as is. But gains will be optimal with tuning (a/f and cam timing)

like someone said earlier, if you want to keep "honda reliability" go with the type-s cams. although i would definately get the valvetrain to go with it, or else you sacrifice that reliability.
on-the-other-hand. if you plan on really building your motor, i would save another 300 bucks and get some crowers.

can you replace the tensioner easly w/o pulling the motor i know space is really tight down there... can you get at it by removing the fender liner?and timing cover?

Yes you can leave the motor in there. You just have to remove all the parts that cover the timing belt. You don't have to remove the fender lining though.
i don't think there are any markings on the cams... thats why i would never buy used s cams, or any cams for that matter, unless you have one of those mili meter thingys and check the specs.

I don't know about the Type S cams but my Crowers have the part number stamped onto the ends of them.
