turn signal laws and location

Hey just bought a 2001 prelude and the owner before me installed a body kit. The body kit doesnt fit the jdm style turn signals and i'm planning on shipping the car to california where i hear they are really strict. I was wondering if it is legal to relocate front turn signals from bumper to side view mirrors? or any suggestions on fitting turn signals on front bumper.

DOT requires amber turn signals located on the front of the vehicle. The side mirrors do not count as being the front.

what if he installs JDM side markers? I don't know about USA, but rest of the world considers them turn signals and many cars just have reflectors in the front. Like 4th gen ludes for example.

Funny thing. JDM sidemarkers aren't turn signals. Their location would not be considered "the front of the vehicle". So, they would not be a legal alternative to a crappy body kit.

^^^ this.

You need amber turn signals in the front of the vehicle. Some states do not require side marker lights but do require amber turn signals in the front just as it is required to have red brake/tail lights.

Also, there is no such thing as "jdm turn signals" usdm and jdm turn signals are the exact same thing. The side marker lights are the only things that differ (light wise) where USDM are on the side of the front bumper and JDM are on the fenders. If that is what you're concerned about - the side marker lights - then just install an oem bumper or jdm markers on the fenders. But be aware that any light on the exterior of a vehicle must be operable, so you can't just install them and not have them working.

I currently live in california and I have clear signals infront and on the side of my bumper. So far in the past 6 months I haven't been pulled over at all! Though it is illegal it depends on where your exact location is! I am located in the garden grove/ Orange county area and the cops aren't THAT strict from what i've seen.

DOT requires them, so this trumps any state law.
