No, I left the motor intact. Today I added the reinforcing plates to the firewall and adjusted the pedal to ensure the travel distance. Now the pedal is ever more spongy and the noise is just as bad. So tomorrow I'm going to drop the tranny and check out the bearing and clutch.

Jeesus crist, sounds like an air compressor.

Honestly, you need to tear it back apart, something wasn't installed correctly.

is that the sound that you say goes away when you push the clutch pedal down?

Yes, that sound goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed down. I got the trans off and check out the releasing bearing and there seemed to be no play. I'm going to replace it anyway. For some reason everyone keeps telling me I need to check the throw out bearing but when I went to purchase one, they told me that they're the same part. So is there one bearing or two bearings on the transmission input shaft? That is the bearing connected to the shift fork, correct?

It's more of a clutch fork. Shift forks are inside the transmission and actually change gears.

And yes, thats it. Keep in mind, the throwout bearing(TB from now on) is NOT supposed to have pressure on it all the time. They are only meant to have pressure when they are pressing on the pressure plate. Otherwise, they should literally be floating on the shaft.

There is only one, and it is commonly known as a release bearing or a throw out bearing. They are the same thing.

I've had a Throw out bearing go bad and it only made noise when I WASN'T stepping on the peddle. As soon as I stepped on the clutch peddle the sound would go away. Just because there's no pressure on the bearing doesn't mean it isn't spinning. The input Shaft is Still rotating inside the bearing, even if it is floating on the shift fork. When I took that bearing off. I disassembled it. It was ruined with brinelling. Which is basically when the rollers, or balls (depending on bearing type) actually indent into the races of the bearing. As you can imagine a bearing full of little dents isn't a heathy one. Since the bearing isn't press fit the most likely cause was shipping. It has been proven that improperly shipping bearings can cause them to get brinelling marks. Especially when shipped via rail car.

the throw-out bearing doesnt touch the input shaft so it doesnt matter if the input shaft is spinning. the throw-out bearing should be completely still unless you press the clutch pedal and the throw-out bearing is pushed into the spinning pressure-plate springs.

if your noise was present when not holding the clutch pedal down and went away once you pushed it down then your noise was probably caused by vibration of some sort and not the spinning bearing.
