Transmission rebuild

So I bought a tranny with 65xxx miles on it, or so the person claimed. After installing it I used regular oil, changed the oil to synchromesh about a month or two later to make sure it was clean. The shifting got a lot smoother, it's an m2a4 tranny. But I have problems getting into first at times, sometimes it'll move up like it's going but not engage, etc. Well, also whenever I shift into second, it kinda bogs in a sense? Like you shift at a higher rpm quickly and you get a big jerk from the car without grinds or anything. If I shift very very lightly and slowly, I can avoid this but what could cause it? I'm in the market for a H22a and I could get the trans with it for an extra $500 or I can rebuild the one I have now, which would be more cost effective? Or is it a trans problem at all? I figured for a rebuild take it to a shop and get only the things I need changed and I was thinking carbon fiber synchro's. I have the manual swap with everything new and I already swapped the front mount that was going bad, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well that was what I was planning on, but I know a guy that can probably get me a deal on a rebuild if I provide the parts so I was unsure of the cost difference. I've heard upwards of 1k to get a tranny rebuilt so I was kinda giving it second thoughts.

You have what is wrong with my tranny. It's the synchros or the clutch pressure plate etc. It's getting worse for my car. It's hard to get into 1st and I can feel it clicking into gear now not gliding. I noticed it's not engaging as quick as well :| But my clutch is not slipping

If you are going to rebuild yourself, which I did and didn't find that hard, use this book.

How to Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission

It has a complete tear down of B series transmission, which was very similar. Great photos to show you what exactly is going on and how to stack the gears!. Found my at a Northern tool for like 12 bucks and it saved my rebuild, hell it even confirmed that I had an LSD tranny : ).

You can preview at this link too:

Yes mine is acting quite odd as well KraserK, I would say we may have the same problem but I do have a brand new clutch and flywheel and maybe 65k miles on the tranny. The new trans is non lsd is what I forgot to mention so I may try rebuilding mine while I do my h22a swap and swap out with some carbon synchro's and fix anything needed and know it'll last me a long time. I would say though, our transmissions are probably fine? I mean, I'm not getting grinds or anything I just like to make everything run and drive perfectly rather than have to worry about what the last dipsh!t did to it.

Chase I think we are the same lmao. I bought a flywheel and the clutch and stuff is coming soon I don't think I really needed too. And yeap our gearboxes are probbaly fine we just want it perfect. My one has 130,000km's on it and it's the same clutch and flywheel from 11 years ago . Got to love old japanese couples lol. With the carbon synchros what ones are you getting? Are there diffrent synchros for ours. I have no idea if these are interchangeable or anything. I want to upgrade my ones I want a bulletproof gearbox.

^That's what I was thinking, but I cannot remember the brand of synchro's I was looking at. I believe they only make carbon fiber for 3rd 4th and 5th, then second is a dual cone. The thing is, we're prolly looking at A LOT of money when it comes down to it. I think it'd be about 5-700 to get it done by a shop including the synchros. I myself will most likely need a shift fork as well. Of course I guess it'd be worth it in the end when our gearboxes outlast every other car's.

I wish the synchros for our cars weren't so expensive.

i remember grinding my gear bad one time and i had a slight knocking noise from my tranny. i just let it ride while i thought about what i wanted to do. then recently the noise got bad so when i took the tranny out i noticed the output shaft cracked through the back of the bell housing. now im waiting on a used tranny that i bought from a junk yard. it sucks cuz i dunno the condition of it but at least it has a 90 day warranty to make sure its good.

i was gonna buy a rebuilt tranny from synchrotech til i realized i wouldnt get my core deposit back once he saw the damage to my tranny. does anyone know if synchrotech has a good reputation?

^^^They are one of the more popular places that people get their non-OEM synchros from. I'd say they have a good reputation, but they are really one of the only places that we can get synchros from except the dealer; so it's not that they are the best, it's that they are the only(sort of--there's got to be others).

^^Holy ****, those prices aren't that bad! Hopefully they have quality parts.

From what I've heard/read, $280 for all synchros needed doesn't sound correct....?

I think you should be looking at the synchro sleve section aswell not just the synchro section pIERCE. And the rebuild section has it with the carbon ones for $405. But yeap $280 for all synchros I emailed him.

So wait, there are more parts you need than just the synchros? Do the sleeves wear out, too?

I am sort of confused....?
