Transmission Problem - Car Reving and Not Moving

I have an automatic 98 Honda Prelude.

Today while I was driving home from work I noticed that my car was jerking a bit the first two complete stops that I made at a light. It would jerk right when I was about to complete the stop.

Then all of a sudden when I gased it, my RPM just reved really high and the car was not moving. It was as if I was stepping on the gas in neutral. Then it would jerk and go into the next gear. Then the same thing would happen in every gear. In fourth, it would just keep on reving.

Check engine light is on.

Anyone know what the problem might be? I am taking it to the mechanics tomorrow and kind of want to have an idea of what might be wrong.

Thanks!

Not great with auto transmissions but either torque converter failure or shift solenoid failure, Honda has a TSB on the 5th gen auto transmissions, they are junk.

What you are experiencing is just the beginning. It's going to get worse and worse until the transmission completely fails. Same thing started happening to me a couple months ago. It got to the point where I kept checking my rear view mirror when it slammed into a different gear because it felt like I was getting rear ended. After a couple weeks of that it became undrivable. Now my cars sitting on jack stands while I perform a 5spd conversion on it

Just took it for a quick drive and when it goes into a different gear now, there is a big stall then jerk. It felt like I was getting rear ended. Then with my foot on the gas it will all of a sudden rev.

its also possible your tps is bad. usually like that could be sensors either to tps(throttle position sensor, vss(vehicle speed sensor), or tiss/toss(transmission input speed sensor or output speed sensor). Check the code possibly with the torque converter, line pressure solenoid, shift solenoids, or cts(coolant temp sensor). If more in detail let me know.

Another dying/dead sissy-stick. You should read the thread that says "READ ME IF YOU OWN A SISSY STICK" or something like that.

All automatics fail, only a matter of time.

I took my car to a mechanic last week and he told me that my transmission was dead. I got code P0700 and P0730... something like that. I decided to go ahead and fix it. It cost me $1,400. I'm still going to buy a new car but I figured that I could use a second car in case one breaks down. I couldn't sell it for much anyways. It's old, got 150K miles on it, and has been in an accident.
