Transmission Problem

Hey guys,

I own a 2000 Honda Prelude. It's an automatic (big mistake), as the transmission died at 130,000kms. I've read a whole bunch of threads on this website about other people facing the same problem.

Basically my 2 options are to either rebuilt the tranny or swap it for another one. Just a couple questions:

1. If I rebuild my transmission, is it likely to fail on me again? (considering i don't race the car)

2. If I swap the transmission, am I just putting another transmssion that will eventually have the same problem?

What do you guys think? Is it worth fixing my transmission or should I just get rid of the car?

I've invested a lot of money into making the car look nice (aftermarket alarm, tint, stereo, wheels, body kit, etc)

Any advice/suggestions will be good.

Thanks

your best bet would be to do a auto to maunal swap cause I can imagine it being embarrasing driving an automatic around and plus the trannies just suck from all the things I have heard

Again, Yes.

That is up to you, but it is probably still going to be much cheaper to fix your tranny than buy another car. It will be next to impossible to sell your current car for anything more than peanuts with a busted transmission.

If you must drive an auto, cut your loses and buy a different car. That transmission blows. If you are willing to drive a manual, your best bet may be a 5spd swap to permanently fix the problem, but the going rate for that seems to be about $3k.

so if I were to swap to manual, the manual transmissions don't fail and have the problem that the autos do?

Errrr, except they are known for the so-called 5th gear grind. and the trans you get is not guaranteed to have not been ran into the ground previously. The manuals are not bulletproof, so do not get that assumption. However, they are much stronger and more reliable and durable than the auto's.

Good luck.

get a good rebuilt 5-speed from a rep shop, syncrotech rings a bell and there are some others. do some reserch on a 5 speed swap. rebuilding your auto plus R&R will most likely cost you around 3K anyhow. you could do a really good 5 speed swap for that much.

1500 for Built tranny
700 for flywheel and cluth(maybe less if you just want OEM, but not recommended)
some or all of the cluch hyd lines/hard parts could be had from an accord or prelude in a junkyard from like 89-03 I think do some reserch on a honda parts web sit.(majestic honda works) there are others
