Well, a stock SS has a single tube that runs through the bottom of the stock radiator. Because this line just runs through the radiator fluid and doesn't actually have any fins attached to the tranny line... the heat transfer due to convection is piss poor.
Using a transmission cooler, you have a much better way of getting rid of extra heat that builds up in our transmissions... which ulitmately leads to failure.
So forty bucks to prevent 5000 dollars for a remanufactured unit from Honda... I would say that a transmission cooler is a great investment. Too bad I wasn't smart enough to install one two transmissions ago.

Who did the install? I live In the bootheel of MO and I was wondering where you're from in MO?I was thinking of getting a tranny cooler ever since I started to mod my 97 SS. If you're from the St. Louis area will you be at the meet Jacques is putting together in March? I'll be there if my car is ready-going in for body kit and paint tomorrow. If you did it yourself how hard was it?

The install took about an hour and is relatively easy. All you do is find a place to mount it and run the lines to the stock ones that I posted a picture of.
I haven't heard anything about Jacques meet. I am good friends with Doc2Be hear in Columbia, so I am sure if he hears about it... then I will.
Have a good one...
And yes, Go Mizzou.

i recommend running the B&M tranny cooler. much better quality. It's about 50-60 bucks. You might want to get some extra hoses and such.. i ran out when i did the install.. and had to get a friend to pick me up to go get some extra ones.
Originally posted by ShowSpeed hmmm.. in your picture.. you ran your hoses from the driver side.. how come you didnt do it from the passenger side?
Shorter distance.. less pressure drop. (so i think.)
I didn't really think of worrying about the pressure drop, because if there is any it should be so small that it would be negligible. I wanted the tranny cooler to be mounted on the drivers side of the car, so that is why I chose to run the hoses that way. I haven't had any problems yet, so I guess I will cross my fingers. In addition, I connected the return line to the stock return line at the bottom of the radiator, so if I mounted it on the passenger side the hose would be ridiculously long.

well keep us posted .. however, i would never try to do this mod b/c im not so mechanilly friendly everytime i try to do soemthing i always end up breaking it ... so do you konw of any shops in DC/VA/MD that may do this ????????????? or maybe even honda ?
Any transmission shop would do this... but I definitely recommend you trying this your self. If you can turn a screw driver, you can install a tranny cooler.

Just call any transmission shop and get a quote for putting on a transmission cooler. These coolers are originally meant for cars and trucks that are towing things. When you tow heavy loads your transmission takes a beating... so keeping the fluid cool is essential.
Several people have done it on SS's already. I should of done it a long time ago.

..okay sounds good. so I just have to call up a "transmission shop" and ask them for it? I'm assuming that these are universal applications then. what should I consider a fair price (in USD$ or whatever) if I want them to do everything for me?
To answer both questions... 100 bucks installed is pretty fair.
I bought my cooler at a local parts store... but you can get one from summit racing or Jegs pretty cheap. They come with hose and clamps for around 40 bucks, but you will need extra hose... which you can get at any local parts store.
I haven't noticed an difference in performance... but I can definitely tell it's cooling... by checking the inlet and outlet temperatures.

okay so if we get someone else to install it for us.. do we still need to ask for the extra hose?
