Torque Converter Lock Up failure?
I went to the dealer yesterday because my check engine light came on. They told me the lock up function on the torque converter had failed (transmission code 40-1) and that required REPLACING the tranny. They also gave me a very nice quote of $3,900 to fix it for me, very nice of them don't you think.... NOT
The car drives fine. I'm wondering if driving the car will do any damage as many auto trannies don't even have torque converter lock up mechanisms. Does it really matter if the lock up doesn't work?
If it needs to be fixed do you really have to replace the tranny? Isn't there an easier way to fix the problem than to replace the entire transmission?
Finally the check engine light came on right after having the oil changed. The shop that changed the oil ended up spilling oil from the filter. Could the spilled oil have gotten onto an electrical control component for the transmission perhaps... a stretch I know but it seemed awfully coincidental that the check engine light came on right after the oil change.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
