Ball Joints can definitely cause that.
The kid I bought mine off of had complained of the same issue... he thought it was a loose tie rod, but it ended up being a lower ball joint that the cotter pin came out of the castle nut, the castle nut had loosened up over time with OVER an inch of play and the ball joint was about 3 bumps from failure. Luckily for him, the nut and threads were rusty, so the nut never came off causing catastrophic failure.
Anytime he hit a bump, the joint would pop out and allow the wheel to become loose and "flap" around. Should make an awful knock when that happens.
It is possible that when the struts and springs were installed, that either the joints may have been damaged (it happens, especially if they were already worn or damaged), or may not have been seated and tightened properly when re-installed. Make sure everything is still tight and that all the cotter pins are still in.
Check the play in all your ball joints and the tie rod ends before you go any further with that or you could be looking for a new prelude after you lose your wheel under your car after the next big bump.
