IM getting new tires for my stock rims which are size 205/50/16
im thinking about getting kumho supras but i was talking to a machanic and he rec. p205/50VR16 size in these tires. i asked him if i can lower my offset and he said no it wouldnt be good. then i ask what about on a bigger rim he saysi should stick with the stock size even with bigger rims. cause it can cause more stress on the engine and wear out the engine faster what you guys thinks about all this? and what do you think is best
First of all if you get a bigger rim you can't stick with the stock size. Second, if the mechanic knew anything about plus sizing he would know that when you increase rim size you decrease the aspect ratio so that the overall diameter of the wheel ( rim and tire) is close to if not the same as stock. Also if you were asking about speed ratings, you should get at least the stock speed rating if not higher. At least a V rating but nothing less. Hope this helps. If I mis-spoke somewhere please correct me...thanks!
I think the mechanic knew what he was talking abotu just didn't want to go into details with the guy. Imagine having to explain plus sizing 10-15 times a day.

Ive got some Dunlop Sport A-2's with about 20 miles on them for sale. there 205-55-16, I went with a little larger tire cause I wanted something that would give me just a little more ground clearence and it rides just a tad bit better.

That might be true, what led me to belive that he might not know what he was talking about was keeping the stock tire size on a larger rim. Maybe he was talking about increasing width and not diameter. I don't know?!
OK, sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't think bigger rims would have a negative effect on you engine but then again I'm not a mechanic. If your worried just stick with the stock setup, otherwise try an alternate setup. the only effect I can think of is if you alter the diameter of the wheel (tire and rim) your speedometer would be off other than that I really couldn't tell ya.
