Timing belt / head change question

Bought a 98 base M/T that with a broken timing belt and I am in the process of changing out the head but now I wonder if I need to because I can turn the camshafts freely without any of the valves (apparently) hitting any of the pistons. Did I get lucky and can I just go ahead and replace the belts and everything should work, or no?

Thoughts from you experienced H22 mechanics out there?

Thanks!

Do a compression or leakdown test, and if that checks out ok it should still be good to go.

Just because you can spin the cams does not mean you are in the clear.

Usually a broken timing belts means bent valves...but not always.

Just send the head to a machine shop, they'll clean it and check it, if you need any valves they'll let you know and replace wheat you tell them to.
