if the motor just dies while sitting at idle, that's a major sign

That's not necessarily a compression issue. Misfires can be caused by poor maintenance in general. Ignition and sensors are the first things to check.

mine sometimes does that, but like Artifex said, it could be a misfire or something along those lines. Is your check engine light on?

yea it is on, but the entire ignition system has been replaced. i.e. the plugs, wire, cap, rotor, coil, and the ign. control module

Sometimes with a CEL the car is just generally sluggish and idle will dip. I would really look into that CEL tho, that would probably solve your problem

it may or may not throw a code if they fail intermitently

I'd go ahead and do a compression test, at the very least it's good information about your engine. You can pick up a cheap compression set and the test is as easy as changing your spark plugs.

pop the valve cover off and check for valve clearance on all 4 cylinders. Sounds like you might have some tight valves. It may even be possible you might have some burnt valves. 1st generation CR-Vs are notorious for having tight exhaust valves, and when you don't catch them in time, they usually throw misfire codes and have burnt valves.

edit: I wonder if he solved his problem. I just realize he made this thread like 2 months ago.
