Thanks for the offer bouckaroo, I'll let you know in the next day or two. The guy I bought the starter off of said it was from a 5spd 5th gen lude but who knows, maybe its from a civic or something. I'll pull it out again tomorrow and check the part number.
Well the starter's part number, or what I assume to be the part number is SM-42227. there's P5M on the upper right of the sticker. Can anyone help me makes heads or tails out of this?
mine is 44223, i have a 4th gen tranny, no idea where the starter came from. have another 4th gen lsd tranny but it has a bosch starter
and i have a sh tranny which is also 44223.
no idea what yours means (not much help at all i guess).

And I read on another forum that fidanza made some flywheels meant to be used with JDM starters with the same part number. Perhaps That's my problem, it seems kind of improbable but I figure it could be worth one last effort before having to drop the trans. Does anyone know where I could acquire a JDM starter (short of buying a transmission with it on), I'm not having much luck tracking one down.
Well when I put the new transmission in it was while I had the whole motor out. So I guess I don't have an opinion on just dropping the trans yet. It just looks like it's going to be a pain. Is it possible to pull the transmission out of the engine bay, Like from above? Or does it have to be dropped?
No it has top be dropped. What you do is remove battery and tray, intake, disconnect slave cylinder from trans, starter. Unbolt the top trans bolt that has the clitch line mount bracket on it, dissconecct the shift linkage lines. Undo the front suspension(both sides), remove the axels. Once you have the axels out and the linkages off and the other wires(starter, vss, reverse switch ect..) undone, you then remove the cross brace under the trans. Place jack under engine. Undo the front engine mount and rest engine on jack.Undo the rear transmission mount. Then undo the passenger side transmission mount from the bracket holding it on the trans. Then Remove the mount (the one tha attaches to teh car above the trans on the passenegr side) completly and take out the trans mount bracket. Once this is done you can move onto removing the transmission housing bolts. Once these bolts are out you can then proceed to lower the jack (just a bout an inch and half maybe two inches) so the engine drops towards passenger side. Once this is done you then need to wrestle the trans off of the engine and then give it a twist counter clockwise so that the shifterlinkage actuators clear the frame and then once that is done the trans drops right out(i usually drop it from the top, like hold on to the trans form teh top of the car and then gently lower it to the floor, i fyou have two people one under the car is great and one above to help take the weight off; for soem reason everytime i need to pull my trans everyone i nkwo is busy, so i have jsut got use to doing it by myself). After you take it out, jack the engine back up to where it needs to be until you are ready to reinstall the trans.
Now, it may be possible i missed a step here, but this is jsut off the top of my head so forgive me if there is somehting else that needs to be done.
Anyway, the install is the revers of this howevr getting it back in is a pita and you will need someone else to help you as one personm needs to be under the car to rotate the trans so it will fit back in, and then the other person can operate teh lifting device so that the below person isnt struggling trying to lift and can focus on getting the twist right so it will go in.
