Stupid OKC Streets

So I'm driving over to my father's house to help him out since he just had surgery yesterday. A mile from his house I come to a railroad crossing that was just repaved because it was horrible. I've gone over this crossing a couple of times since it was redone. Unfortunately, this time I went over in the right lane. The railroad crossing in the right lane is basically a motocross jump now, but I didn't know that and went over it at 35mph (speed limit is 50mph). I went airborne and landed just short of the other side. My car bottomed-out and it ripped my exhaust system clean off the car. The force of the muffler being shoved backwards 6" ripped the lip off my rear bumper.

Here's the damage. I know, ****ty cell phone.

Note to self: do not attempt dukes of hazard type jumps in the prelude.

That really blows man...any damage other than the exhaust and lip?

Wow, I would get the DOT to pay for that, and inform them that they will need to fix there "improvement" that they performed at the railroad. Good luck.

You're lucky that didn't cause an 80mph backflip!

I really can't tell. The open header is so loud that I can't hear my own screams. There is a slight metal clunk during accel and decel, and I think it's just the header hitting the crossmember. I'll find out more on Monday, when I get the car up on a lift.

They will be hearing from me.

That's actually a pretty tragic yet lucky story, if you've ever heard it.

I feel your pain. I just hit a retreaded semi truck tire in downtown Seattle on Friday doing 65ish. Ruined my new bumper, new paint, 3m mask, and lip.

Furthermore: Immediately after the incident, I walked back to the RR crossing to see if anything was left behind. As I was standing there looking around, 3 other cars bottomed out, including 1 small SUV. So it's dangerous even for OEM suspensions.

My car is only 1.0-1.5" lower than stock.

Man i am sorry to hear about your car. I am sure though if you go and take pictures of the crossing and then maybe get a video of other cars that have stock ride hieght bottoming out on the same crossing then you may be able to get the county or city to pay for the damages. However to do this you may need extensive proof that the crossing was the problem and not your ride height. I one time hit a steel plate that was on the roadway and it ripped my tire right off the rim, i went to Kal tire and had them fix it immediatly and then while that as happening i took photos of the culprit. I had the guys at kal tire write what had happend and where it happend on the bill then i took the photos and the bill to city hall and lodged a complaint. After about 2 months i got a letter in the mail with a form to fill out. I filled it out then sent it back in and then about 3 weeks after that i had recieved a check from the city of edmonton reimburseing the cost of having to get 2 new tires installed and balanced and what not. I dunno, thats my experience i hope it may help you.

My dad is fine. He tore his rotator cuff and had surgery to correct it. Also, it's his right arm, so he can't really do anything for himself.

Story: About 9 years ago I was driving down the highway in my 88 S. I just got off work (2am) and was on my way to a party, so I was speeding. Well it had just rained a very small amount but wasn't raining anymore.

Well in the highway, there's a gradual right hand turn followed by a gradual left hand turn. I've taken these turns at 100mph, so it's nothing special. The problem is at the apex of the left hand turn, the highway goes under a bridge. When I went under, I hit an oil/water mixture that didn't get washed away by the rain (because of the bridge directly above it). The back end started to slide to the outside of the turn. So I turned the wheels into the slide, hoping to straighten it out. Unfortunately, the front was sliding as well so I had no control. After a few seconds of sliding around this curve, the front regained traction but the wheels were cocked all the way, pointing to the outside of the turn. This made my car spin 270 degrees clockwise (or from 6 o'clock all the way around to 3 o'clock, for you geometrically challenged people). The momentum of the car sent me backwards off the highway, into a 6ft ditch. The back of the car hit the side of the ditch and flipped straight backwards, landing upside-down. The momentum was still there and so the car slid upside-down for 200ft, just picking up mud.

When it finally stopped, I crawled out covered in mud. My car was still upside-down. My head was killing me (concussion), and I realized I had no more cigarettes. However, about 300ft down the road there was already a tow truck and ambulance. Seems someone else hit that same slick and it caused them to smash into the car next to them and they both went off the road.

So backflip in a Prelude at 80mph, and I walked away without a scratch. I just had a concussion for about a week.

Update:

I took some better photos.

^^^ You can see how it ripped the clip right out of the bumper.

And here's what it looks like now that I've repaired it.

The 88 was bad. The exhaust will get fixed tomorrow or Tuesday. No one is open on Sundays.

Update: Just got the exhaust fixed. All total I had to drive 50 miles with an open header. What a pain in the ass. Damn pipes were banging on the crossmember the entire way and it was OMG loud. I definitely turned some heads with my Honda sounding like a Harley.

So here's the total damage. The flange on the Tri-Y header got scuffed. The cat didn't get touched. The elbow bends were both scuffed and tweaked to about 100° each, making that section look more like a Z. Because they were crush bends and got bent more than 90°, they were almost flat. Got that fixed. Got the new flex pipe welded on.

Grand total for damages: $158.50 ($75 for flex pipe, $75 for labor, + tax) Lip repair was free.

That really isn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Your rear wheels and suspension made it through that unharmed?

Why the crush bent exhaust? This could have been a great opportunity to get some mandrel bent pieces installed.

Mandrel bends will eventually make it into my exhaust. I think I'm going to ditch the 2.5" and go with 3.0" plus mandrels. But funds are required.

The entire force of the impact was taken by the front of the car. I didn't land hard enough to mess anything up in the suspension department. It just bottomed out right after the front wheels.

Now that everything is fixed, my CEL came back on. I expected code 80 (EGR), but instead I'm getting CEL 63, ATTS 43, and ABS 16. I wonder what those mean.

Hmmm, if only somebody had posted a chart or table to offer some insight as to what those codes mean.

According to the DIY ATTS ETC ETC LIST which you did Kronn hehe.

CEL 63 = Secondary Oxygen Sensor - P0137 (low voltage), P0138 (high voltage), P0139 (slow response)

ATTS 43 = ECM Communication Line

ABS 16 = Wheel Sensor: RR (Electrical Noise/Intermittent Interruption)

Maybe the jump did something to your sensors. Or maybe some wires have come loose from the jump over the rails etc. She will definetly need some checking over.
