i was JUST about to post a new thread on this, but I did a quick search and I think I'm having the same damn thing...

I haven't noticed this sound until recently (past few weeks, maybe 3). I had my 60k tune-up about 1-1.5 months ago. Anyways, here is my situation:

Before, when I would come to a red light and put the car in N, while the engine is decelerating down to idle rpms, the engine would make more of a "whirling-hollow" sound. Now, I can notice it when I'm still in gear, and just let go of the accelerator, while the engine decelerates. BTW, it's starting to get louder. I've got no idea what the sound is. Can anyone help??

The car is still making the noise after having the t-belt changed. I have no idea what it is.

I have the exact same problem and have had it for roughly 9 months on and off. It started last winter. Since then I have changed the oil twice.

It is a hollow whirring rattling sound coming from the driver side of the engine in the timing belt region. It only happens at roughly 1200 rpm when I take my foot off the gas to come to a stop. I can also make it do it when I roll into the throttle slow when pulling off from a stop sign or when sitting still with the car out of gear by holding it at roughly 1200-1400 rpm. I can only hear it in the rpm range.

The car has not lost any power and is not using more oil than usual. It is due for a new timing belt soon (in 5000 miles) so I am hoping that that will take care of it.

Any definitive explanation for what this is?

This sounds like a common prelude issue. My 2001 started doing this like 2 months ago, and it give the shhhrrr sound when the throttle is off. I also run no catylitic converter and no balancer belt, because I know some of you asked whether that had to do with it. It seems it makes no difference as other with balancers and with cats experience this.

So is this a normal thing that I shouldn't be worried about?

^ I meant common as in a lot of us seem to experience it, but I worry about it some.

It could possibly be due to my aftermarket intake system. As this is one of the noisiest thing in my engine bay. The shrr could be a vacuum noise similar to when you shut the engine off.

Well my engine is completely stock except for synthetic oil. I was really afraid that it was oil starvation in the oil pump or a water pump problem actually but I don't have a cooling problem or oil pressure problem. It does seem to come and go or at least get louder and softer. It's not any of the accessories. idk but I am glad to know that I am not the only one.

It was definately the autotensioner for me. Took it in to Honda and had them replace it... while they were at it I asked them to replace the water pump/tbelt. The noise is gone.

Time to resurrect this thread again.

I'm having the same noise, sounds exactly like it did 2 years ago before I had the timing belt/autotensioner/water pump replaced. Just came back a couple days ago.

I had all of these replaced around 70,000 miles and the noise went away. Currently I have around 103,000 miles on it and the noise came back. Is there a chance I have to replace this crap again? I really don't want to spend that money.

autopartswarehouse.com has the auto tensioner for $75, but maybe you should think of going with manual swap
