SS Tranny fluid change

I just broke 17,000 miles and I need to have my tranny fluid changed. My question is, is it necessary to drain and fill it 5 times in order to get all of the old fluid out. I just got a quote from the local dealership of $34.95 for 1 drain and fill. Is this a pretty reasonable price? Do I really need to get all of the old fluid out, or will I be just fine with the drain and fill. Also, this being my first fluid change do you think I should try my best to get all of the old fluid out. Even if that means draining and filling it several times? Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure we NEED to do this at 17,000 miles? I thought it was good until 30,000.

apples and oranges...

since i have a 5sp but i will say that when i did it, i didn't completly drain the old fluid out, just most of it and added two containers of honda MTF which cost me like 12 bucks i think. i did this with 30K on the car. oh, and i had to buy new two washers, another dollar or so...

Hey about the washers.......

When I went to go buy the case of auto tranny fluid I also asked for a new washer....

The service guy looked confused and asked me if I was talkin about the washer for the oil pan I said NO..... Then he said that there was no washer for the tranny bolt??

I could've sworn that a new washer is needed??

yea, for mine, i had to buy two washers. one of them is the same washer used for the drian plug and the other was larger. i think the small one is for the refilling hole.

yea, i'm not sure about the ss set up at all, but i would assume you still have at least one washer to buy. superflea did his around the same time i did mine, you should ask him.

I've changed my tranny fluid twice (just because I like to keep things clean ) I have about 35k on my 99ss.

In any case, you only need one washer, and 3 bottles of fluid (fill it up about 2.4qts)...the process is very simple, and it's easier to just do it yourself...and much cheaper!

For SS trannies it is very good pratice to change fluid every 15000 miles although the recommended interval is 30000 miles. Each time requires about 3 qts. (I believe 9 qts. total in the transmission).

Yea they say 30,000 for tranny fluid but if you think about it, they say 7500 for an oil change, which is not my idea of good maintainance. I have 19k on my 99 and have changed it twice, I have decided to change every fall when she goes into hibernation. Cheap insurance the way I figure it.

tranny fluid

My intent now is to go after Jiffy Lube, for pouring Dexron 2 in the tank. Can anyone point me to documentation that Dexron 2, will muck a 5th gen SS?

I know the Owner's manual says Honda ATF only or Dexron 3 until you can get genuine Honda ATF into the thing. Any other credible sources, perhaps w/ a link?

Re: tranny fluid

I know for a fact(according to reputable transmission shops) that for Crysler tranny, must use crysler tranny fluid and no other!!!
they are made specifically to work on their trannies...guess might as well use the honda one for peace of mind...

And for manual, never ever totally flush your tranny
