Yah, it's been gone for some time. Basically, you need to divert the fluid that flows from the radiator. If you see my very large pics above, you can see where these locations are. There are 2 hoses that connect the tranny to the radiator. On the radiator, the passenger side hose is fluid flowing into the radiator, and the driver's side hose is fluid leaving the radiator and returning to the transmission. You need to remove the small piece of hose off the driver's side radiator nipple. Run a hose from the radiator nipple to your aftermarket cooler, and run a hose from the aftermarket cooler to the return pipe on the tranny. It may also be helpful to loosen and rotate the radiator nipple 180°.

Dude... you crack me up.

There isn't a stock MT cooler... where would you hook it up? Also, there is no MT oil pump to circulate the fluid with suficient force to get it through the cooler...

The stock AT cooler is built into the OEM radiator. ATF is an integral part of the opperation of the AT itself, as ATF is used to actually couple the two halfs of the turbine in the torque converter. (Except when lockup occurs...)

In any event, ATF is used as the lubrication and COOLANT for the AT.

In the MT there is not coolant, the MTL functions simply to lubricate the parts and prevent excessive friction. It is, effectively, spashed over the parts inside the bell housing... as opposed to seriously pumped through a bunch of pathways like the AT unit.

As such, there is no way to get MTL into any sort of cooler.

Since you have a Type-SH, you could add a cooler to the ATTS unit... but that's about it.

Also, certain operating temperatures are engineered for with various transmissions. For example, ATF should not operate below 175F as that is the optimum operating temperature for prolonging the addtivies in the ATF. the engine coolant in the Prelude typical stays about 200F. This means that the transmission will be about 240F (ish) in an SS Prelude. So the cooling goal should be from 175-200F with 175F during the winter and 200F (ish) during the summer.

I just went back to stock from the Mugen thermostat, radiator cap, and fan switch. With the Mugen parts, my coolant temps ranged from 170-195. Now with the stock parts back in, my temps range from 185-220. I think it's time to reinstall my tranny cooler. I really need to get a temp gauge for the tranny fluid.

220 is not horrible... it's just explains why the ATF wears out so fast in the SS Auto...

If you had it from 175-195... that's perfect... that'll atleast keep the tranny from getting obnoxiously hot.

Gerhard, question for ya.

"The stock AT cooler is built into the OEM radiator. ATF is an integral part of the opperation of the AT itself, as ATF is used to actually couple the two halfs of the turbine in the torque converter. (Except when lockup occurs...)"

That being said... this mod has no use for a SS lude then?

...the mod is not possible on a MT tranny... on an AT tranny it's probably a good idea as long as you don't over cool the tranny fluid.

Shark's writeup is the way to do it... and probably the right sized stacked plate cooler to.
