SS drivers wanted

I did try 'search' but could not find what I was looking for so..
I just started using the SS and want to know what would be the proper way to use it.
From what I heard, it is good practice to let off gas when upshifting, but I hear others suggesting not let off gas, so what is the deal?
correct me if i am wrong.....I do not blip when 2-1 downshift, just let the ss do it automatically when i come to a complete stop, is this bad?
what do you do when you are cruising 55mph and comes to a sudden stop?
I brake till 12mph and downshift 3 to 2(no blip) then ss auto downshifts to 1 at a complete stop. It feels smooth, any objections?
and what do you do, when you are coming to a stop? how and at what speed do you shift? sorry for the long post....peace

I don't even....

I don't even use the sport shift...After hearing all these tranny problems, I just stick to borin ol automatic driving, I let the looks the car gets satisfy me instead. Which brings me to the question...Is it better to drive sport shift or auto? which ones better for the tranny and can I expect my transmission to last a long time without any mods or without beating the caR?

How much does it cosT? ?

How much does it cost to get the tranny replaced ? ?
And whats the chances that it's gonna blow? ? Are there any SS ludez out there that are surviving on the original tranny? ?

Damn....

I've read a **** load of tranny horror stories, but don't you guys think that only the people with messed up ones are the only ones complaining? Like the ones with ones that are working...I don't think we would see them on the boards that much? Whatever...If my tranny were too blow, I would be in deep. I don't even have the funds to cover it, I'm only 17 and I think my parents wouldn't cover it for me either. And is that 3500 to 5000 US or canadian? ? Do you think I should purchase one of those after market warranties? ?

there has been tons of discussion over this.....i think look under "downshifting techniques" for SS or something or other. i did a pretty long write up and there has been lots of discussion over this. i'm at 19.5k in my 00' lude that's been driven in sports shift mode everyday since day one and so far it's been running smoothly, minus one bad occurrence half a year ago. but even so, since then it's been fine cuz i know how to drive it (also know how to drive stick, so the rev matching and shifting patterns are correct).

if i was to give anybody SS advice, it would just to test out what the car can handle, and how the shifting feels to you....it's more of an acquired technique rather than a learned one. i've only downshifted from 2->1 twice and both times were really jerky. even with the throttle blip, it wasn't smooth at all. if i want it in one now, i just slow down enough for the tranny to auto downshift to 1 for me, then let it fly. all my 3->2 downshifts are done with blips so they've all been smooth, and my 4->3 ones at wot are fine with me mashing on the gas.....or if it's to slow down, just make sure you know the rpm range of the mph you're going and if it's under 3.5 or so, then that's fine to not give it a lotta gas to downshift. if i'm not making sense, just ask again and maybe my head will be clearer later.

if you know how to drive a 5spd , then driving the ss is basically the same thing minus the clutch. u just shift as you will at any rpm you want. short shifting to save gas, but i found out that it doesn't on the lude ss, cause i can barely get 20mph (today i got a horrible 16mph~!! )

my advice on downshifting when slowing down, just let gas go, press brake so the rpm drops, and your at a good MPH for the gear to engage so there's less jerking. like 4-3 at like 40mph, 3-2 at like 15-20mph, and if you even wanted to shift from 2-1, my advice would be at less then 10mph for minimal jerk.

for driving around, don't use ss unless ur int he city, cause theres basically no poiint. i like the ss when i was in NYC, cause there was so much traffic i just drove around riding 1-2 all night. for shifting techniques its basically up to you. you wanna hit vtec, you hit vtec, you wanna save gas short shift.

just hit 66k on 97 ss lude, going fine.

I dont know if this is true or it may just be me ... but everytime i hit vtec or put a little more weight on the pedal ... my gas tank kills like crazy .. ... like i put 94 oct which omg makes my car feel so much better ... well this thing is expensive and it kills me when i hit vtec b.c of the price therefore i shift everytime using SS at about 3 rpms .. l.... yes im cheap .. im still in HS

This is very true... I do the same thing when I drive around in Cities in a stop'n go traffic. It just allows me to avoid all those jerking around the auto tranny would do... keep seeking for gears whenever you steps on the peddle a little bit...

I have a 99 Lude with 49000kms on it... that's like just over 30000miles on the car, and my tranny is still going strong... hopefully it'll last.. :-)

DaRawkus8, I find out our SS lude's milage can be very dependent on the driving style you have... few weeks ago, I noticed that I was only getting 240miles per tank... yup... then I figured that it might be due to the fact that I just got my header/exhaust and pulley installed.. and I rev my car like crazy.. hehe... But when I see that I was only getting 240 miles per tank... I started to realize how bad I was driving and I changed my habits... now I'm getting around 280-300 miles per tank.. yup... that's right... I'm driving like an old lady now...

Actually,I have different opinion...do correct me if I am wrong, since it seems that lot of wear and tear begin in the 1st and 2nd gears(according to failed SS trannies),wouldn't it make sense to shift them manually to lessen the burden on the tranny in the busy traffic where the 1& 2 gears will change frequently?

perhaps a tranny cooler!

Hey... I throw the car into whatever the hell gear I want. I don't think our SS trannies are THAT fragile... the only fragile ones are the ones that are gonna go anyways. I always shift up and down whenever whereever because if it's not safe the ECU won't let you do it... like you CAN"T shift into first above a certain MPH etc etc... so heck just drive the damn car. When I brake... I down shift from 4 to 3 and sometimes 2 but never to one... I always just go straight into neutral. That's only when I don't want to brake too hard... most of the time I just throw it into nuetral going like 80 and brake into the off ramp. That's how I drive my car...
