Solved my burning oil issue

I always wondered why I lose oil. I posted on these boards about it and some say its normal and some say they have not lost any oil in between oil changes.

So I decided to keep track of it the last 2 oil changes I have had.
The last time I checked my oil it was below the first dot in the dip stick after 1.5k miles, which made me wonder where my oil was going. So before I did the next oil change, I checked the oil level, it was right where it was when I last checked at 1.5k miles. So I didnt lose any oil inbetween.

It says we need 5.1 quarts of oil in the engine. So I normally put in 5 quarts. Well I did my oil change 2 days ago and I decided to check my oil level today. To my surprise the oil was in the first dot. When I put in the 5 quarts 2 days ago it was at the second dot. So I can only assume that most of what was missing went into the oil filter.

So I can say, that I never lost any oil, I just forgot to take into account the oil filter whenever Im doing my oil changes. Now I can sleep better not wondering why my engine kept eating oil

after you fill up your car with oil, your supposed to idle it for around 3-5 mins, then turn off your car and check your oil (again and refil as needed). that allows for your engine to cycle some of the oil around.

^do that

I also prime my filters by filling them about halfway up with oil and letting it soak into the element. Works best with vertical mounted filters. This means less time where the engine sees no oil after a change.

I do that with my Nova, since the small block Chevy filter is mounted vertically. Kinda hard to do with the filter on an H22a, where the filter is mounted vertically.

yah i hate the position of the 5th gen filter. I have a base (i heard the SH is worse) but every time i change the filter, when i take it off, oil drips all over my exhaust piping...pisses me off.
