So I discovered that my Prelude has a test pipe....

I changed the oil in my Prelude for the first time yesterday and discovered that it doesn't have a catalytic converter. In the cat's former place is a section of steel piping with welded flanges. It's a clean job, but there aren't any 02 nubs on it. This probably explains the mild exhaust smell that I sense whenever I'm at a stoplight or exiting the car. I realize this setup is bad for the envorinment. But is it bad for the car to have the pipe in place?

No it's not bad it's what you call a test pipe. If there's no 02 sensor are you getting a cel?

a lack of a cat IS bad for the environment. there's a reason highly reactive metals - such as platinum or palladium - are used to convert emissions. otherwise you're releasing not just co2 and water, but dangerous nitrides into the air.

He didn't ask if it was bad for the envrionment. He even said it was bad himself. He asked if it was bad for his car.

oops. read that one wrong.

eitherway, it can end up being bad for the car. modern cars regulate themselves and if there is no O2 sensor it can throw the engine out of whack. as well as fail you in emissions, since the computer logs emissions, hence the o2 sensors.

I haven't had a check engine light since I bought the car. The small green service required light has been on for a while though. But I heard that's meaningless and can be reset.

Either you have an OBDI ECU or they are running some type of secondary emulator. Otherwise you would have a secondary code and possibly a catalyst code.

Your safe, and no the ice caps are not melting because you have a test pipe.

No CEL? Next time you get in your car and turn your key to the on position, check if the CEL comes on and then off after few seconds after. If you do not see a CEL well that just means the previous owner could've disconnected to hide a problem. Check it out!
