Hey guys, I'm new to the VTEC thing, whereas I am fixing problems myself... (2nd 5th gen lude though)...
Heres the dillema.
When I hit about 5200 RPMS, my VTEC kicks in, and in 1st gear, nothing bad happens...
Once I hit about 6k in 2nd gear, it lets out a little white smoke.
Does the same at 6k in 3rd as well.
But not 1st, 4th, or 5th.
Its not a head gasket issue, beacause the coolant level never changes.
I do burn oil rather quickly when using VTEC, and I know some oil burning is normal, but mine seems a little excessive.
I also have spray all over the rear bumper from the exhaust.
AND, after a lot of driving, at idle, sometimes it acts like it wants to stall out.
I feel this is all because of the same issue, unfortunately I don't know where to begin looking.
VTEC filter/screen?
Plugs/wires?
Throttle Body?
Air/Fuel Ratio? (p.s. how do i adjust this on a 5th gen prelude?)
Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated.
your engine is tired and the rings are not holding correct seal at higher rpm. What this means is that your engine will not be making as much power as not all the conbustion force is beign applied to the pistons due to the rings weakening and leaking slightly, causing teh blueish white smoke to be discharged. The onyl; way around this is to tear the engine down, re hone the cylinder walls, get new rings (or new pistons dependign on budget and what not), gap them correctly then rebuild the entire engien again.

I, again, am completely new to this, and feel VERY UNCOMFORTABLE around engine repair.
If i was to do this myself, (my buddy has a shop and will be able to do it for me...) how much am i looking at for the parts? (if i'm going to do this, I am going to buy good performance parts, and what not.
What else should i do when doing all of this work?
and What is gonna be an approx cost for everything I am going to need.

Have a competent mechanic run a compression test on the motor first. How many miles on the motor now? The stock OEM cylinder finish cannot be honed and refitted with oversize pistons and rings. Block has to be bored and sleeved. These motors use oil. Period. Use vtec and you're going to burn more oil. Don't panic until you fully understand the problem and whether it's even a problem. My .02

Like Velocity said they use oil, myn kicks a little smoke when entering VTEC from time to time as well, however it is not excessive.
Figuring out what gears it smokes in is irrelevant.
Sure yours might be farther along, how many miles are on the engine? I would stay on top of the oil level, do ALL regular maintenance to try to fix the stalling issue.
New Sparks, Rotor and Cap, check wires, Clean EGR, air filter.
However it could simply be the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE, which is very easy to clean and could very well solve that issue.
Honestly though if you feel 'very uncomfortable', your the type that needs to get out the credit card and let someone else take care of the problem.
