I have some rust/chipping at the bottom of one of my shocks. Thankfully the rust is on only one shock and everything else is perfect. I wont be winter driving the car from now on.. but I'd like to put a stop to the rust right away.
I was thinking of sanding it down good and painting.. has anyone done this before? What do you guys recommend?
Use some naval jelly to remove the rust and then get a Dremel or other tool with one of those stainless steel brush discs to remove anything else down in there. Then make sure you paint it really well.

For paint, you have several options.... actually you can use whatever you want... but.
Rustoleum works great and the paint compound resists flaking under heat (brakes ) but I see this is a rear shock... so you don't have to worry about it that much.
or you can contact Tein, sales@tein.com, and ask for some touchup paint well they offer it in Japan *shrug*
also, if you are really anal about it... send the shock in to get repainted
I spoke to Tein USA about the rust... they said that it's just comestic and won't affect performance... which is basically their way of saying they aren't going to do anything about it. My Teins are completely rusted that the paint is flaking off. I'm going to take them off, sand blast them and repaint them.

be VERY careful sandblasting your shocks; shoot for a split second at the wrong angle and you'll have a very expensive piece of scrap metal!

Would Restoleum work on spots were paint has already chipped off in terms of rust prevention too?
As for the touch-up paint. I've contacted and no US Tein distributor can get these. Any other possible source Jay?
You've got to get the rust off before you repaint them. If you just repaint the chipped spots and the metal was already rusting, it will just rust underneath your repainting job until it bubbles. Once you've gotten the rust off, they won't rust if you repaint them.
I've had my SS for two years with no rust, but I'm in Texas.

When I bought my used set, I did a complete dis-assembly, cleaning, and re-assembly.
There were areas where the paint had been nicked or the paint was bubled and rust forming. I cleaned the areas really well, sanded to bare metal and gave the spots a liberally coating of clear nail polish...
