Should I lube head internals before starting newly built motor for the first time???

I bought a rebuilt head and put it on a Type-S short block. The rockers and whatnot in the head are all dry. Should I put some oil on the compnents inside the head before I start the motor for the first time? Or will oil be pumped on them soon enough to where it shouldn't matter?

Yes use assembly lube. With out it you have a bunch of metal on metal parts moving which destroys parts.

Thanks for the replies. I assumed I should lube it, but just wanted to see if I HAD to.

What exactly is assembly lube? Can't I basically just pour some fresh oil over all of the rockers/that area?

I wouldn't recommend just regular oil unless this head was taken off a working engine and put on to another working engine. But since it's brand new, you want the protection of a really thick, sticky oil to coat all your parts well for those initial seconds it takes for the oil pressure to come up and start coating your head's moving parts. I recommend Royal Purple's Assembly Lube but Torco is probably the company who makes the most well known. You'll find alot online or at your local auto parts store. I saw ARP (the famous stud making company) makes an assembly lube as well.

Well, the head isnt brand new, but it was cleaned/shaved and had new valves and seals installed.

So assembly lube is just thick, sticky oil? Do you just pour it over the rockers/that area?

Yeah, well ideally you coat the parts in it before they were installed or just when you're ready to bolt them down.

I watch Horsepower TV on Spike TV every Saturday and whenever they're doing an engine build, they're always slobbering every part up with that Torco assembly lube and talking about the benefits.

I suppose if the head has been used you can just pour some motor oil on it... I recommend Royal Purple of course

You cheap as$, I was gonna say Cavalini Extra Virgin imported directly from Italy because it's the oil of choice for Ferrari, but fine, he can pour Wesson on it.

Oh yeah, the lube is definitely needed in your case. You really should've put it one before assymbly like prepreludesh said(I also like watching Horsepower), but doing it now will be better than nothing.

Good luck
