Should I buy a wrecked 5th gen

Sooo I already a 97 prelude but with 200,000 miles on it (bought fot $2000) the automatic transmission is about ready to go. Engine is ok but definitely needs some maintenance. I've already started to piece together parts for a manual swap and every have an h23 crank and rods to put in my h22.

Here's my pickle. A friend of a friend is selling his 98 prelude which was just in an accident. Has no near bumper, no front bumper, rad support is smashed in, radiator is broken, muffler is broken off and the headlights are busted. and the kid wants $2000 for it.

What caught my eye was he told me the guy who had the car before swappeed in a different motor so it only has 80,000 on it. the motor just so happens to be an h23 vtec. it is also a 5 speed and has alot of misc thing i can use such as a new deck, floor mats, trim pieces.

Question is, is it worth me paying $2000 for a parts car when i bought my car for $2000?

you may also ask why not just replace whats screwed up on the other guys prelude. that's because it's totaled and i'd have to get a salvage title.

thoughts???

I've never paid over $900 for a parts/wrecked car, so IMO, it's not worth $2k. I can find a non wrecked 5th gen for around that much. To me, having a salvage title means nothing, as long as everything has been fixed right.

When my car got rear-ended, the insurance company totaled it and sold it back to me for $600. I could have sold it "as is" (completely smashed, look at sig) for $2000 because of the parts and condition of everything except the ass end. Instead, I decided to part it out, for which I believe I'll get closer to $3000.

Some cars are simply worth more than others.

good points. this kid is very firm on $2000. i'm going to try and talk him down to maybe $1600 which i'd find more resonable for the condition it's in

The price is way too high. There should be some other wrecked 5speeds you could source parts off of for less.
