Do you have a 5th gen? If so, forget about adjusting the timing. It'll adjust itself back to factory setting. BTW, you can't even rotate the distributor on the 5th gen. One of the 3 mounting holes is a round hole instead of a slotted hole.

There's a trick, but not a little one. Do a OBDII to OBDI swap, but it's gonna cost you. And you'll lose the immobilizer.

Their's a hard way and an easy way of going about adjusting your timing on a 5th Gen Lude.

1) Hard and cheap - Requires modifying your ECU, I can tell you how but unless you're REALLY ready to rip your ECU apart I wont.

2) Easy and kinda expensive - By an MSD 6AL w/ an adjustable timing module.

I'd like to know.... Does it have to do with a timing delay circuit for the TDC or CKS sensors? What about adjusting one of the sensors at the crank? Or maybe a resistor in the IAT sensor.....
