Shifter Moves In Gear

Last night when I was driving back from my friends house I noticed an awkward smell that smelt like oil but I just had the engine replaced and it's solid (jdm H22). Then the transmission went loose. By that I mean the shifter has full movement in gear. It also felt like I was only getting 3,4 and 5th gear. I can't get 1,2 or reverse. I was able to drive the two miles or so back home. I took the center console and everything looks ok as far as I can tell by the shifter assembly. I did put a neuspeed short shift adapter on about a year ago, could that have caused a problem with the shift cables. any help would be great

Did you check where the cables attach to the transmission?

what do you mean full movement in gear. so your in second gear and you can move the stick around? it's sounds like your transmission needs repair. sounds like your synchroze. the first and second gear are ussually the first to go in those cases.i don't think its your neuspseed short shifter kit caz i have it too and no probs what so ever. do you get locked out of second gear when drinving? if you do it probbly is your syncroze. Be prepared to spend at least 800 bucks to rebuild your tranny. a better bet might be to just buy a low millage one. let me know how things work out. later.

Sorry for the short response guys. What I meant by broken cable was I went out side right before I went to sleep and looked at it with my maglite. I figured it was the cable attached to the lever next to the shifter because that cable engages on left and right movement which is why I could move it in gear.

Under the hood I looked down on the cable end and saw that when I moved the shifter all the way towards 5th gear there was no cable attached to the transmission. Problem solved, the high tensile steel wire snapped.

So my real question is how hard is this to swap out. I have all the tools I should need and more than enough time. I'm in college so I can ride the bus everywhere and have my car on blocks. I also have the helms manual in pdf to go by and if anyone wants it email me.

I found a new wire set from bkhondaparts.com for like 250$. What would be the dealership cost also. Thanks for all the help.

does anyone know how long the shifter cable is for the 2001 prelude type sh.

its the one on the passenger side of the shifter. the ones that moves the shifter up and down.

my cars stuck in first gear and i know that the shifter cable broke so i just need to know how long it is so that i can buy an aftermarket one because honda's trying to charge me $351 just for that cable!
