Hey guys I just bought a 98 lude recently, so I'm pretty new when it comes to anything with this car. But I was just wondering how to find out if it's an SH or not... Cause the dude I bought it from wasn't sure and I didn't see anything about SH anywhere. Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks homies
Sh has:
5 spoke rims
third brake light in spoiler
courtesy lights on door panels
pieces under doors and rear bumper are body colored not grayish-black
shift knob is leather not plastic
when you start the car you should have a "atts" light come on
Sh handles a whole lot better
Decoding the VIN Make sure your VIN matches the car's description! There have been several reports of base models being advertised as SH models!
JHM BB6 a b c d C 123456 stands for
JHM = Japan Honda Motor Company
BB6 = Chasis name
a = Tranny. Either 1/2, 1=stick, 2=auto b = Trim. Either 4/5, 4=base, 5=SH
c = random check digit
d = Year. Either V/W/X/Y/1, 97/98/99/00/01
C = Plant. Sayama, Japan
123456 = serial number
My base is by far the best handling front drive car that I've driven. I can't imagine what the SH is like.
It takes you a few times to get the hang of the ATTS and get the most benefit out of it. When you're in a turn in your base and the understeer creeps up, you let off the gas to negate it. When in a turn in the SH and underst.... oh wait, NO UNDERSTEER, lol but if you do start to feel it DON'T LIFT UP THAT FOOT! Give it a little more gas, you can get a good feel for it, and hang on because that ATTS is gonna PULL you through that turn

This is such a huge misconception I'm sick of hearing it. It's all in the driver man, and it's such a tiny difference in STRAIGHT LINE ONLY acceleration that proper maintainance, age, and simple bolt ons, can easily turn the tables. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, I believe the SH VTEC cam lobes have a fraction of a hair more lift to accomodate the drivetrain loss
Well I would say it is easier to find parts for it (base) and slightly cheaper, that I cant take away from you, but in the end it is the drivers choice if he/she wants a basic model that has good handling and no atts or Great Handling with ATTS.

I would say that in terms of mods it doesn't make much difference except for the ECU (no standalone) and the fact with ATTS you can only pull so much power.
Don't forget you can always fit a gear based LSD to a base. Not ATTS but they both have their positives.
Dang lots of good info, thanks a lot guys! But I'm still confused by my lude... it has the SH rims, spoiler w/ brake light, and leather shift knob. But it has the grayish/black trim around the bottom and I don't see the ATTS come up anywhere when I start her up. And lastly, if that info about the VIN is correct then its definitely a BASE haha, but some of the accessories are just throwing me off

Previous owner just swapped those parts then. Things like SH wheels, shift knob are easy to swap and dont really accurately determine which model.
VIN, and the ATTS light are the true definers. Also the door courtesy lights or lack of. Very few people actually take the time to swap in the courtesy light door panels.

lol, age and condition of the car have a lot more to do with over all power performance than the small added weight. Hell, the weight difference can be made up with something as simple as a lighter weight driver, etc.
Its really of no difference

I totally agree on that, im kind of tired of ppl saying the SH is slow bc of a few extra lbs, most likely less than 80lbs due to atts components and SH add ons (I believe). I mean I understand it can not push more than 250hp at which atts disables itself, but I honestly think the SH has enough power with some bolt ons and a few internal mods to feel pretty quick and have great handling at the same time.
