Yeah....I have a 2001 base and just noticed bubbling in front of one of the rear fender wells. I know Hondas/Acuras are prone to this (this is my family's 8th), but I didn't suspect it at such an early age (car has just over 25,000 miles on it).
I'll be taking it to the dealer at some point to see if they'll warranty it. Anything I should look out for?
Who else has had this problem? I'll try to get a pic up, perhaps tomorrow morning.
Don't be That salt is just a killer and I noticed he came from Michigan. My car was owned by someone from Illinois at one time and it was quite rusty also. Fixed now though
Just because you live in a place where they salt the street doesnt mean you car is gonna rust. Wash your car fairly often during the winter. Kansas salts the roads when it snows and I have no problems with rust.
It's not like I'm not taking care of the car, I mean, I wash it when possible, but I wouldn't expect it to rust so quickly....
Other than "protecting" the paint/metal, what purpose does that rubber lining serve? And will taking it off really prevent crap from getting stuck in there?
I'm just hoping the dealer doesn't try to say it was "chipped" or something to that effect. If you look at it, there's nothing there, except bubles and rust color. No chip.
Unfortunately, this will mean that entire panel will need to be repainted, won't it?
Well Honda was a rust through warranty. They should fix it without question though. Make sure and remove the rubber lining when when they are fixing it just incase it has rust under there also.
They should blend the paint in, it is hard to say if the entire panel has to be repainted without any pics.
Goodluck and keep us updated on your progress.

I noticed this too last weekend when I washed it for the first time in awhile because of all the bad weather we've been having in the Northeast. I have little tiny spots of rust forming. I'm just going to take it to my body shop to see what the deal is with it. Its probably from a rock hitting the side and gashing through the clearcoat and paint and the salt and snow getting to the sheetmetal.

i'm so pissed! this sounds exactly like my problem w/ my lude, i have an 01 SH w/ a lil over 15K miles (way too premature for any type of corrosion) anyways, i talked to honda and they said bring it in asap, so they better take care of this, but yeah, this really blows huh?
i had a dream the other night that my lude had rust all over.... freaked me out.
i have tiny rust spots near the edges of the fender/bumper and above the wheel well so nowhere too noticeable but this shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I live in Cleveland, OH and talk about salt. However, some of the rust spots you see on your car are not actually in the sheet metal itself. There is a small amount of ironite in the salt they throw down on the road. Also, there is a lot of tiny particles of metal/iron and other corrosive bits on the roadways. When they get on your car they rust almost instantly, and if left for very long, sometimes that rust can stain through your clear coat. It's easily removed with a good wax and an orbital buffer. However, if you see bubbling then it's from the inside out and will have to be removed and repainted. A good body shop can blend your paint so you won't even recognize it.
The rear quarter panel wheel well area is notorious for rusting just above the wheel well in Hondas. I highly recommend pulling the rubber pieces off and cleaning them and the wheel well with hot water and a detergent like meguires or something (OFTEN). I've owned 4 Hondas up here in CLE. Everyone of them I've cleaned prepped and coated the inside of the fender well with a good coating of primer or rust protectant and have not had one bubble of rust ever. Hope this info helps maybe.
the honda tech said it's surface rust.... is that what you're talking about? cuz i can use my nails and get rid of some, but yeah i believe it started to eat up at my clear coat.
If it's corroded through your clear coat it will just get worse in time and then you'll have a more serious problem. I suggest having it buffed out first and see what it looks like. If there is little or no improvement in the appearance, I would demmand that Honda fix the problem, if your under warranty. If you're not under warranty, then I would get it fixed and repainted at a body shop. Get several quotes and ask to see there work, especially with metallic paints. A good shop can do wonders with blending. If they just want to repaint the panel and that's it, I would go somewhere else. If Honda fixes it, make sure they do the same.
Also, jack your car up (you can do this a wheel at a time if you don't have jack stands) and remove the rear wheels and look inside the rear fender well. You may have to clean it up a little. Look to see if you see any surface corrosion there. If you do then It will start to eat through the sheet metal to the otherside. If that's the case I would get it fixed asap. Again if you're under warranty demmand that Honda fix it.
