rough idle

my idle has started to get kind of rough lately. its intermittant and very noticable. the car is stock other than a K&N, and has about 54000 miles on it. ive replaced the spark plugs, and i had a valve adjustment about 2000 miles ago, but the problem started about 500 miles ago. any ideas?

Try the plug wires. My experience is that a rough idle is almost always ignition related and you said that you changed the plugs so try the wires. If it's not the wires, open the distributor cap and check the points. Make sure they aren't corroded. Failing that I would say to check the fuel injection. If you use cheap gas, buy a fuel injector cleaner to clean out the deposits.

Have you replaced the cap and rotor assembly (where the plug wires are attached, circular black box)? I replace mine every 15K for top performance, and after 54K if it hasn't been done, I'd suggest it. I'm at 82K with the stock wires and no issues, so I'd suggest doing the cap and rotor first. It's about $30-40 in parts and should take less than 30 minutes even for a beginner. Actually, while you are in the store, you should be able to pick up a set of wires for the Prelude. You could certainly try them and if they don't work, return them for a refund.

I would run a bottle of Regane through the system. You should be able to get it at any auto parts store and it's about $4/bottle.
It's happened for more than 1 tank of gas, right? I'm guessing so since you mentioned 500 miles (unless you get *fantastic* mileage!). Are you buying your fuel at the same place? If so, try a (more) reputable place like a Mobil station and run some 93 Octane for a tank or two.

AF905- What kind of car do you have? How many miles and do you have any modifications? I know lots of people (including yours truly) that race and/or redline their Gen5 Preludes with no valve bending.

I have a 2001 EBP 5 Spd Prelude.. It sounds ridiculous but I only have 13k miles on it.. I Let a friend raced it and he redlined it one 1st gear for like 3 seconds... valves were bent.. cylinder heads had to be resurfaced.. new gasket.. blah blah.. im glad I got my car back.. No internal Mods.. just Headers, Intake, and exhaust thats it... I know a lot of ppl that redlines... but you shouldn't be redlining in the first place..

no, it doesnt fluctuate... stays about 700 rpms and the car shakes more than normal is all. still sounds the same as normal, and while driving there is no difference from before the rough idle.
im going to check the distributor as suggested, and start using amaco 94 octane gas to see if that helps

AF905-

I've layed on the rev limiter during autocrosses for the last 4 years! My brother even layed into it for 3+ seconds while he was racing it until I slapped him and he got off the go pedal! Hmm, sounds like you just got very unlucky.

"...but you shouldn't be redlining in the first place.."

You sound like a Honda Dealer! The Rev limiter is supposed to do exactly what it says, limit the revs or engine speed. Honda put it place to prevent the motor from fragging (just like yours!). You should be able to lay on the limiter for any decent amount of time and not cause engine damage. The dealer denied your warranty b.c of your parts?

I haven't had a problem with it... I've redlined it for far longer than 3 sec going around the twisties (you kinda have to with the Prelude's gearing).
