Replacing timing belt and water pump

Was wondering how long it should take to get your water pump and timing belt replaced? I got an estimate of about $1200 bucks does that sound right??

That's a little high, but in the ballpark.

No way man, I got mine done by Honda for 750
Another very reputable Honda specialist said 850 but that included converting to manual tensioner

just to let you know, my timing belt went while i was driving....i called the honda dealership here and they had quoted me $2000.

Chances are if it went while you were driving you probably busted more than your timing belt, namely in the head.

Also, I pretty much doubt that you can do a compression test with the belt broken because the valves have no way of opening/closing. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You would need to disassemble your engine to get to your timing belt... save that for the specialist. You can get your belt and pump changed in a day if you drop the car off early enough and cost around $650.

I agree there is a chance, but only while on the high lobe. Below vtec RPMs you are going to be okay. My wife was driving my Prelude when it broke. No problems with valves.

If by disassembling engine you mean, take off valve cover + plastic pieces on the side...then yes.

It really isn't that hard and you aren't really taking much off. just have all the tools you need + all the parts associated with the R&R

if that included installation, it'd still be a little on the high end

93 prelude Vtec

I just got my prelude and there is a huge oil leak from the from of the engine, the timing belt is about to snap, the balance belt is missing. I got an estimate to fix all of that plus adjusting the valves, strap down the exhaust (its falling off), and replace the water pump and coolant. They would also replace the entire timing belt assembly. Is $1100 a good estimate.

Thanks

You mean the side of the engine? Is your head gasket leaking? For $1100 that wouldn't be too bad. Sucks that just the gasket itself is cheap but your mostly paying for the labour

Is this through the dealership or an independent shop?

I called a few Honda dealerships yesterday and was quoted $550 for just the timing belt + installation. Waterpump, balance belt, autotensioner would be just the cost of parts. With everything, he estimated around $1000. Another dealership quoted me $790 for timing belt, water pump, and balance belt.

Im debating just doing it myself. It's really damn expensive.

^yeah man, are you just in need of a T-belt and the rest of that stuff, or is there something wrong with your car too?

Hey all, I have always wnated to know.....What is a balance shaft? What is the belt for? And the most confusing part is, I've heard people say, "I deleted my balance shaft", What does it do, and why is it there if you can take it out? Are there any consequences?

Thank a lot all.

I got quoted around $800 for just the timing belt and water pump at my local honda dealership. I called a local reputable import shop and got quoted around $500 for timing belt, water pump, h22 auto to manual tensioner conversion, valve cover gasket, coolant oil change, and all seals that need to be replaced. Try to find a local reputable import shop in your area to save money.
