If I have my red learning key, and a blank T5 cut from the red key's pattern, would I be able to copy the code from the Red key onto the Black and avoid bringing my car in? Or is the key code on the Red key completely different from the ones found on the master/valet keys?
..I don't want to have to tow my car to the dealership if I don't have to!
and you don't really need the honda t5 key, locksmiths have blank keys that work just as well. they can also download your cut pattern, they don't need a key to make a cut from. i'd check with a good locksmith and see if they can download the key code also.

Only have the Red key. Need new key. Car is far from dealership. Rather not tow car if possible.
Also, found out the hard way that the previous owner had replaced the ignition and locks, so when I got a key cut from the VIN, it didn't work mechanically. That dealership was also convinced that the '97 keys didn't need to be programmed (idiots)
From the reading I've done through the FAQ (amazing btw) it seems I just need the red key, and my car, and the dealership figures out the rest. I was just hoping for a solution that didn't involve moving that hunk of scrap metal and cost me more money..
That bypass thingy looks awesome, but I'm sorta pressed for time so I wouldn't be able to wait for shipping :/

If you hacve a red key and a valet key, then you should be able to go into teh dealership and have them use teh valet key to cut tegh key pattern onto a new black key, then they should be able to use the red key to programm the black key. I dont get how they need your car. Wheni lost my keys (and didtn have a red key) i had to take the car in to get a new immobiliizer installed. Since that happend i was informed that if i need another key copied (to work in the ignitiona s wella s the locks) i would need to buy a new black key, bring in both my red key and black key, and then they could cut and program the keys from there without havignt eh vehicle on hand.
No. You'd need to copy the code from a valid black key, a black t5 key, or a gray valet key. If they copy the code from the red key to a t5 key (if they even can do that), you'd just make the t5 into another red key which will NOT start the car but will erase all of the learned keys in the ECU.
The red key is for your situation where you lost the rest of the keys. They'll get new black keys (non t5) that already have a code in them, and use the red key to clear the ecu and program in the new keys.
Not sure of the steps (if a dealer tool is also required or not on the obd port but I'm pretty sure its not) so you should be able to order a new black key and using the red key reprogram the new black key at home (after the black key is cut to match the red key of course). The directs may be in the Helms manual, not sure. Even if you try this and it doesn't work for you its not like you're out any.. since you'd already have a cut black key the dealership would be able to use if you didn't get it to work and had to tow the car there anyhow.
In fact I'm pretty sure I still have a black key from my prelude (which I wrecked years ago) if the dealership wants a lot of $$ for a new one.. though I think they're around $50. I could always mail it to you, have them copy the code to your T5 and then using the red key program your T5 (with my old code) to the ecu... at least in my head that would work.. ?
That's really kind of you! I think my CAA coverage should get me just close enough to the dealership to put me out like $20, so that's not too bad.
The only key I have left is the red key. The one I just lost (in Timmins no less, fvcking Timmins, don't ever go there!) was my valet key. Yes I'm irresponsable to have not made a new key beforehand. Hindsight is 20/20!
Clarification; the tooth pattern on the Red key is enough to cut the teeth on a new blank, correct? I then get them to program my immobilizer in my car with the red learning key and I'm good to go.
had someone shatter my driver side window the day before I went on a four day camping trip (9 hour drive). Park the car in my friend's driveway and jump in his car for the drive, leave the lude with a taped up plastic window. Come back four days later, still frazzled, and realize I lost my keys in Timmins, where I was camping. Get new key cut from the VIN, bus to car, find it doesn't even turn the tumbler. Realize previous owner changed all the locks. Only thing I have left is the Red learning key.
May has been a ****ty month. I also learned I'm an idiot and need to fix that.
EDIT: I also got a parking ticket in the time it took me to knock on my friend's door to move the car so I could park in his driveway as we were getting ready to leave. Noticed the ticket when I got back from the trip. Funnnnnnn
Yes. The red key has your ignition cylinder pattern so that can be used to cut a new (already coded) black key. They can then use the red key to now program the newly cut black key to the car.
You also have two options then.. get TWO new black keys and have them both programmed when you get the car there so you have two keys, or have them program ONE new black key and make a T5 copy of the black key.. not sure if one option is cheaper than the other or if they'd be around the same price.
they do not make keys at all at my dealer. not just ones with imobilzers. he said it was too much of a pain so they got rid of it all. my car came with 1 black key and the red key, so 1st thing i did was find a locksmith (had to go 30 miles to find one that could copy the code, but they were really good - didn't charge me for having to get my cut from the vin since my original key was to work to make a copy from).
i don't know how the immobilizer works, but if he has to have his car towed then i'd call 1st to make sure they do keys/immobilizer work. mine can't be the only dealer that said f it.

Dang, that sucks. I do know some places that deal with Hy-Ko can make chipped key dupes now (such as the Ace Hardware near here). I think they just pull the code and dump onto a blank, but I'm not 100% sure (though that seems like it would be the easiest route).
so you have the correct immobilizer code on that black key? take the red key to get cut at the hardware store off of any key, and tape the black one to it to start it.

Ended up going in to see the manager. He got the monkey to re-trace the pattern on that hooked key. NOW it turns. Just have to get it towed to a dealership for programming of the immobilizer, and I can then start worrying about the driver's side window (sigh)
good news is that my CAA covers me for 200km towing, and I found driver side glass for $100 from a salvage yard! Anyone have a "how to replace your own glass" writeup? lol
i'd interview the monkey's to make sure they can do it right. if they can't cut a key, can they reprogram it?
i've never replaced glass, but i think you just take off door panel, release the regulator holding it in, and slide in the new piece. when i changed the window motor in my jeep i had to tape the glass like crazy to the door so it wouldn't fall out. once you take the door panel off you should see how it sits there.
