So, I'm looking to upgrade all of my speakers and my head unit in the near future, but i really know nothing in this department. Can anyone recommend some decent speakers and a decent headunit (ipod compatable please). I'm not an audiophile or anything, so I don't need anything that is super high quality or anything, but something a good step up from the stock system that won't break the bank. Also, easily installed would be nice, as I am going to be doing this myself
And whats the price range on replacing all speakers and a headunit? Would 250 dollars be a decent budget? And would I need an amp or anything else? Thanks!
The Pioneer AVH-P6300BT, AVH-P3300BT, AVH-P4300DVD are Great systems and they are not prohibitively expensive either.
As for speakers...I put JBL's in the doors and Sonys in the rears. The door speakers are hard to fit in the 5th gen cause the depth is a problem. (In my experience)

i use sony xplod and its good enough to power my door speakers and even a sub, works fine. you gotta cut out a plastic basket with a razor blade to get aftermarket speakers in the front doors but its easy, literally takes like 2 seconds. but to switch out the headunit you gotta take out the acoustic feedback crap system. bonus weight reduction, just do a search to figure out how to do it, its pretty easy if you just print out the instructions in the thread or whatever
thinking about this one.
thoughts? no need for an amp if im only powering front and rear speakers right?
and any more recommendations on front and rear speakers?

You won't "need" an amp with it, but it is night and day difference when listening to underpowered speakers vs. adequately powered speakers. If you are driving any aftermarket speakers directly off any headunit, they are going to be underpowered. With the right combination of speakers(High sensitivity) and HU(high RMS output), they can still sound better than the stock sound system, but any setup can be improved by an amp instead of depending on the HU to power the speakers.
Also, Sony's car audio stuff is not that great, but in the $100 range there isn't a lot to choose from. You might be able to find a basic alpine or pioneer unit around that price, or possibly buy a used one with more features.

The 820 that I posted does two things that this one does not. First, it will keep your iPod charged at all times. Second, it has direct connect. This provides for easier control of the iPod plus better sound quality than an auxiliary input. Just something to keep in mind if you actually like music. However, if your MP3s are all 128bit, don't worry about it. They'll sound like **** no matter what.

my front and rear speakers run right off the head unit. and they sound good, no need to get an amp unless you tryin to impress people or something. my sub is powered off my battery but it gets signal from the head unit from 2 rca cables. its an infinity joint that has everything built in. the point is the head unit can be used with a sub and it all works fine.
Problem I have is when I have the windows and moonroof open...even cranked all the way up it's not all that loud. I'm not trying to impress anyone..just wanna be able to hear the music over the sound of the wind. I disconnected the microphone leads from the rear speakers when I replaced them...so its the stock head unit with all new speakers. Head just doesn't seem to put out enough power. The rears are running off that small OEM amp in the trunk, don't know if that is hurting anything.
Google says otherwise, Kronny-poo. Just admit you didn't check it before you posted the link.

If by "or something" you mean have a better sounding audio system, then yes.

The reason for that is that aftermarket speakers are not nearly as sensitive as the stock speakers you replaced. The stock head unit is pretty weak and can't really drive aftermarket speakers very well. An aftermarket unit will output a little more power which will help with volume, but it will probably cause some pretty bad distortion if you crank it, especially the cheaper units. Your best bet is still to use a small 4 channel amp to keep it simple and make it sound better.

I don't have to check it. I own 3 of those HUs. I know they are available. Are you familiar with these new sites called ebay and craigslist?

I have a Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD head unit that i bought from Crutchfield on sale for $135. It was a great improvement in sound over the factory head unit and it has a USB that charges your ipod along with HD radio.
I also have Kicker KS60's in the front doors which fit perfectly after cutting out the plastic housing and sound great! I am still running stock speakers in the back and no amp, but the whole system sounds amazing!

IIRC, that's the trim kit Cruthfield gives you free when you buy a headunit from them. It's a piece of poopoo.

Yes it is the free kit they give you, but it actually is pretty good quality (its actually the same thing you would have to buy yourself, if you bought it somewhere else, just crutchfield gives it away for free).
