A couple people have told me this and I need to confirm this. I am having the 5 gen gear grind and have been double clutching 5 gear for a couple months to prevent grinding. Now that I hear there is a recall I need to take it in. The thing is i depend on this care as my sole transportation and cant get any rides on weekdays. Anyone think this 5th gear sprocket can be replaced within a weekend? I can get a ride by then. I am only 19 and I am thinking they might not give me a loaner car. Will they? Thank you
They will give you a loaner car if your over 18, i'm pretty sure they are able to do the job within a weekend but with how many people are coming in for this problem i don't know. I work at a honda dealership here in VA and people have been making appointments long ahead time so I'd advise you to do the same.
I think I know what you guys are talking about....when you shift from 4th to 5th no matter how carefull or slow, it tends to grind sometimes, well mine is the same way...if there is a recall, lets get some info up here so we can get it solved....
I did not get a letter but I did hear it from other members on hp.com It was about time anyways that 5th gear thing was annoying, always double clutching to avoid it. I emailed my dealer to see how long it will take and plan accordingly.
just curious.. as I've never dealt with recalls before. I'm about to buy a 1997 base prelude. Would I still be able to take the car in and get it fixed? Is this a no-charge deal? does the car have to be under warranty?
Does anyone know the specific details regarding this recall? I just got a 2001 base and I want to know if this problem applies to all or just some of the 5th gen Preludes. If anyone has information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
I have a 2001 and I haven't experienced the problem. THe recall will apply to all who are affected regardless of the warranty situation. Chances are, Honda figured it out before the 2001 was out....
A recall is different from being under warranty. So I would think your car would not have to be under warranty to have the fix. That is my opinion. Im still waiting for the dealer to reply to tell me how long it will take to fix in the shop
HOLD UP! How the heck do you double clutch 5th gear? Does your 'Lude have a magic sixth gear that you are starting from when you double-clutch on your DOWNSHIFT to 5th?
Maybe it's your overworked clutch that busted, not poor old 5th gear!?!

He's obviously talking about an upshift. I don't think there was really any doubt.
I've found on mine ('97 SH) that double-clutching on it's own helps little, as it's not a synchro problem. The only way to avoid the grind is to allow the revs to fall below like 3,000 rpms, and then rev-match for it to slip into 5th. And it is definitely worse when the tranny/weather is cold.
I was under the impression it was a TSB, not a recall. And since I am well out of warranty, I was crap out of luck. So if it really is a recall, that's very good news. But since I rarely find the need to power or speed shift into 5th, I've been getting by.
If anyone knows definitively whether it's a recall, TSB, or whatever, please let us know.

You are right, there never was any doubt - DOWNSHIFT is in caps because it is never, NEVER necessary to double-clutch on an upshift!
Double clutching is performed to bring the lower gear that you are DOWNSHIFTING to, up to speed, prior to selecting and engaging the lower gear! Thus saving your syncros (and ultimately gears, from grinding) from ANY work if you match revs properly.
When you drive a standard properly, and are upshifting, 5th gear doesn't have to be brought up to speed, rather your ENGINE has to be brought DOWN in speed to match the speed of 5th gear. Double-clutching does absolutely NOTHING for you on a upshift, you are wasting your time, wasting life on your clutch, bearings, slave and master cylinders, etc., etc.
If you are having problems shifting into 5th, don't power-shift! As you disengage 4th, WAIT for the engine to decelerate to the correct RPM to match what 5th gear is turning in your transmission.
If this doesn't work, either your clutch is SHOT or your 5th gear syncro is SHOT. Don't talk horse **** about double-clutching on an upshift - you obviously don't have a clue about what/how double-clutching works!
Ok now back to the topic. For those who has problems with the grinding, did you experience the grinding right from the very begining (i.e. when the car was NEW) or the problem developed gradually over time? Roughly it occurred at how many miles on the car? Thanks!

Easy there . . . .
The point of the thread is that neither the clutch or the synchro are bad. No one here is power shifting into 5th to get this result. There is a problem inside some transmissions involving the 5th gear/reverse shifter fork. So even when shifting & rev matching properly, it will grind. What we've found is that double clutching gives the transmission enough time for things to slow down, and it won't grind.
The same work-around can be accomplished by leaving the clutch engaged a few extra seconds, rev-matching again, and then going into 5th. So it's a decision on whether to sit there with your foot to the floor, or proceed with a standard double-clutch. In order for either method to work, I've found that I have to be about 3 times more deliberate than I want to be.
As far as when it started occuring, mine showed signs of it last winter at around 35,000 miles (when I purchased the car) - but only when cold, and it was gone all summer. I've now got around 72,000 miles, and in this weather it happens reliably enough to reproduce it for a mechanic, assuming the car isn't completely warmed up. It takes a good half hour of continous driving for things to warm up enough so it no longer happens.
From what I know, it was mainly '97 ludes that had the problem with the shifter fork. But I've also heard about other model years having initial problems with the 5th gear synchro - it took 4 or 5 thousand miles for it to "get friendly" & work like it was supposed to. But most of what I know regarding this is just hearsay, I haven't yet been able to find a dealer who had any clue.
I plan on putting in new tranny fluid fairly soon - I'm probably overdue. Maybe that will help.

Well US Honda if you have ever experienced the 5th gear grind it can still even grind at 2.5k. Having a gear grind at that RPM is not normal and therefore this recall results genious. Many other 5 genners have experienced this problem. Do we all drive our cars like crap like you assume? No. I do not power shift I do not drive my car hard, do not judge as if you know me. Its obvious you dont have a clue what the 5th gear grind problem is so stop talking like you know all about it. Thanks for ruining the post
You people should really try looking in the archives.
The 5th gear grind was a known issue on the 97's but I believe was "reportedly" fixed on the 98's (though I have heard of some problems still). The problem IMHO is a poor tranny design, though Honda claimed in the TSB that it was an "improperly manufactured 5th gear shift fork."
TSB's and recalls are WAY different. A recall is usually a safety issue and will be fixed on ANY car regardless of age or mileage IF it has not yet been done. A TSB is just a way for Honda to distribute repair updates to dealers- while dealers often consider it an "admission of guilt" and will comp the work, don't expect this very far out of warranty. I'd also not expect it a second time around. TSB's usually point to a faulty factory part or procedure that is remedied with a replacement/rework. A dealer won't be too happy to do the work a second time, or do it on a car that's, say, 30k miles out of warranty.
alldata.com doesn't do TSB/recall info for Honda anymore- I believe that Honda is the only place to get this info from now, though genuine recalls should still be on the NTSB site.
I spoke to a dealership last night. As far as getting it done without charge, it didn't sound promising. The guy I spoke to didn't give me a price quote, but it sounded very ominous. Lots of mumbling about pulling the transmission, a full day of labor . . . . Doesn't look like it's in the cards for me.
But then, he did give me a quote to get the timing belt & water pump done - $485, parts & labor. Seems pretty steep to me, so maybe there's a better place I could get things done. He also seemed confident that there was no need to replace the auto-tensioner. But I'd definitely get something in writing about that, as I've heard otherwise.

I called my nearest Honda dealer ship, gave them my vin number and found out that a recal was completed/done. The code they gave me is 99093K or 990993K. He wasn't sure what that was and told me he'd call me back the next day. I'll keep you guy's posted. T'ill then, thanks for the info !!
The reason I had called was because my 5th gear also grinds. AND IT PISSES ME OFF !!!

I'd live with it. I did live with it. You will likely get stuck for the work (especially if it has been already done), so I'd ride it until there is a genuine "problem."
$500 for a timing belt isn't bad. That's roughly 3 or 4 hours of labor and $200+ in parts. You will need to replace the tensioner, they just don't last much longer than a belt in our cars. The water pump and all the other belts are a minimal cost ($100) compared to everything else, and the labor is the same- go ahead and do them.
Anyone quoting much less than $500 for a timing belt won't be doing it right.
